Verizon Business Launches Managed Web Content Services to Help Companies Fight Phishing, Spyware and Viruses

New Offering Enables Protection Against Internet Security Threats, Helps Enforce Employee Web Usage Policies

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., March 7 -- Large-business customers can now better safeguard critical company information from phishing, spyware, malware and viruses originating from the Web.

Verizon Business is launching Managed Web Content Services, a new offering that efficiently halts Internet threats that can potentially wreak havoc on enterprise end-users and significantly compromise company networks. The new service also enables companies to monitor and enforce employee Internet usage policies to help ensure workforce productivity.

"More and more, the Internet is used as an enabler of key business functions and collaboration, increasing its importance to organizations of every type," said Nancy Gofus, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Verizon Business. "Verizon Managed Web Content Services offers customers an effective line of defense for proactively protecting key assets while helping to reduce the potential negative impact on employee productivity and an organization's reputation and brand."

Triple-Prong, Network-Based Protection Helps Stop Threats at Enterprise Border

Utilizing a three-prong protection approach -- anti-spyware, anti-virus and uniform resource locator (URL) filtering -- Verizon Managed Web Content Services focuses on protecting end-user access to the Internet, one of the primary points of entry for Web-borne threats, by centrally managing this function in Verizon Business' network. This enables companies to take advantage of a cost- and time-effective way to administer and monitor Internet usage policies while helping to stop malicious content before it reaches the companies' computers and internal systems. Additionally, this network-based service eliminates the need to install software at individual work stations.

Available to U.S.-based multinational customers, Verizon Managed Web Content Services includes these three components:

o Web Anti-Virus Service -- Scans Web traffic to identify known viruses
and detect characteristics of potential threats.

o Web Anti-Spyware Service -- Denies access to Web sites that exhibit
potential of threats from spyware, malware and phishing.

o Web URL Filtering -- Tracks employee Internet usage and blocks access to
Web sites that do not meet corporate usage policies established by the
customer.

Powered by MessageLabs, an industry leader, this package of Verizon services is priced on a monthly per-user basis and is backed by a stringent service level agreement (SLA) covering availability, virus scanning, latency and activation.

Companion Service Offers Unmatched Industry SLA

In addition to the launch of this new service, Verizon Business is enhancing the SLA for its companion offering, Verizon Managed Email Content Services. The company now offers a tiered latency guarantee covering the amount of time it takes to receive, scan and deliver e-mail content, as well as an enhanced spam filtering SLA.

Organizations using both services -- which are also available separately -- can proactively scan their e-mail and Web traffic, providing even greater protection against Internet-based threats. A key advantage of both services is cross-threat correlation performed by MessageLabs -- which represents a strong defense against phishing schemes, especially those with malicious links in e-mails. When this happens, access to these sites is automatically blocked.

Verizon Business is the first global communications service provider to offer this type of threat-correlation capability between e-mail and the Web.

Verizon Business offers a comprehensive portfolio of managed and professional security services spanning Verizon's Internet "cloud" network to the core infrastructure at the business organization's premises. This suite of global services delivers advanced threat intelligence and flexible security management, enabling business and government customers to better manage security risks and protect critical assets.

Companies are becoming increasingly concerned with the proliferation of adware, spyware and phishing schemes, especially since most end-users are unaware they are being exploited. End-users can inadvertently unleash a virus or other malware while surfing the Internet or downloading an image on a Web page -- effectively handing over control of their desktop environment to an outside force with malicious intent.

According to a February 2006 report by Forrester Research, "Fear Factor: Information Assets And Viruses And Worms Top IT Security Threat List," North American technology decision-makers ranked viruses and worms (73 percent), employees acting in unauthorized ways (66 percent), and spyware (55 percent) among the top five IT security threats.
