Toshiba Announces High Voltage Three-Phase Motor Drivers with Built-In Power Management Circuits for Energy-Saving in Appliance and Machinery Applications

250V and 500V Single Chip PWM Drivers for DC Brushless Motors Feature a High Level of Integration to Reduce Board Space and Power Consumption

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 17 /Responding to a trend for greater energy-saving performance, Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* is announcing three high-voltage three-phase motor drivers with built-in power management (PWM) circuits for direct current (DC) brushless motors, air conditioner fans, and pump motors. Developed by Toshiba Corp. (Toshiba), the TPD4104K, TPD4111K and TPD4112K single chip inverter ICs are manufactured using a high voltage silicon on insulator (SOI) trench isolation process to achieve this level of integration.

The three devices provide a range of voltage and current specifications to meet varying customer requirements. The TPD4111K is rated for 250 volts (V) with direct current (DC) output of 1 ampere (Amp), the TPD4112K is a 500V rated device with DC output of 1 Amp, and the TPD4104K is a 500V rated device with DC output of 2 Amps. In addition to the power management capability, the new motor drivers feature a three-phase full-bridge distribution circuit with level-shift type high-side driver and low-side driver, output insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), and built-in fast recovery diode (FRD). The ICs are equipped with protective functions for overcurrent, overheating and power supply voltage drop. Hall amplifier input signals and microcomputer control signals enable speed control of a DC brushless motor connected directly to the driver. Use of a bootstrap system with a built-in bootstrap diode eliminates the need for a high-side driver power supply. The three motor drivers are available in HZIP23 packages, measuring 31.5mm x 16.1mm x 5.1mm thick, with an option for leads facing left (LBR), right (LBF) or down (LB2).

"A growing number of home appliances and industrial products are employing DC motors and inverters that take lower power consumption and protection of the global environment into account. With these devices, Toshiba is responding to industry demand for higher power, faster response time, and higher levels of integration, all in a small structure," said Ajay Chinai, business development manager, discrete products, for TAEC.

Customer samples of the TPD4104K, TPD4111K and TPD4112K are available now and are priced in sample quantities at $5.50, $3.00 and $3.50 each, respectively.

Toshiba's Discrete Products

Since 1986, Toshiba Corp. has ranked as the top discrete supplier on a worldwide basis, based on annual revenue from international shipments of total discrete products. According to the most recent report for 2005 from market research firm Gartner Dataquest (San Jose, CA), Toshiba remained the top discrete semiconductor supplier and moved into fourth place in overall semiconductor sales. (Source: "2005 Worldwide Semiconductor Market Share Report," Gartner, released April 2006). More specifically, Toshiba is a leading supplier in a number of discrete product categories, including power transistors, rectifiers and thyristors, LMOS logic, CMOS logic, optoelectronics, small signal diodes and transistors. The company's discrete devices are designed to meet the growing demand for high-performance and lower voltages in today's wireless telecommunications and consumer electronics applications, while emphasizing its strength in the automotive and industrial markets.
