Optical Power Sensor is designed for automated laser control.

October 24, 2006 - With integrated photo detectors, Model SP8130 monitors light sensitivity of laser diode and converts light to output voltage for DVD and CD recorder applications. Offering dual wavelength capability of 650 nm for DVD and 780 nm for CD, optical power sensor features 10 mV differential output offset voltage and ± 6 dB external gain. Its 160 MHz bandwidth @ -6 dB and 6 ns settling time ensures DVD write applications of 16x or greater.

Sipex Announces SP8130 Next Generation Advanced Power Control with Faster Data Access for Recordable DVD Greater Than 16X

MILPITAS, Calif., Oct. 5 -- Sipex Corporation today announces the SP8130 APC (Advanced Power Control) solution, a differentiated output optical power sensor designed for automatic laser power control in DVD and CD recorder applications. With fully integrated photo detectors, this device monitors the light sensitivity of the laser diode and converts the light to an output voltage. The next generation SP8130 delivers 40% faster output settling time which translates into faster system reading capability versus current APC solutions making the SP8130 ideal for DVD write applications greater than 16X speeds.

To meet the requirements of the most demanding DVD (650nm) and CD (780nm) applications, the SP8130 is manufactured using an advanced BiCMOS process which provides increased functional density and mixed signal capability. Featuring a low output offset voltage of 10mV, the SP8130 is designed to detect a wide dynamic range of optical signals for accurate laser power adjustments which reduces read and write errors. In addition, its wide bandwidth in excess of 100MHz and fast settling time of less than 10ns makes it ideal for DVD write applications of 16X speed or greater.

A unique gain adjust architecture allows precision sensitivity control in both DVD and CD modes using external potentiometers which do not reside in the signal path. This feature allows flexibility in adjusting the nominal sensitivities of 4450V/W (DVD mode) and 3000V/W (CD mode) by ±6dB, allowing the SP8130 to be adaptable to a large number of Optical Pickup Head designs. To provide a wide dynamic range of output signal to the RF Amplifier, the SP8130 features a balanced differential output with a 2.0V output swing around an internal reference set at 1/2 Vcc.

The SP8130 offers a unique combination of features:

o Dual wavelength capability: 650nm for DVD and 780nm for CD
o 160 MHz Bandwidth @ -6dB and 6ns Settling Time insures DVD write
applications of 16x or greater
o 10 mV Differential Output Offset Voltage provides wide dynamic range
of output signal
o ± 6 dB External Gain Adjust allows precision sensitivity control
and adaptability to large number of Optical Pickup Head designs
o Small 3.5 X 3 mm, 8-pin OPLGA package

Pricing and Availability

The SP8130 is available in 8-pin, OPLGA lead-free package compatible with JEDEC reflow cycle specifications for lead-free process. Pricing and technical information is available by contacting customersupport@sipex.com.
