Web Guiding System uses brushless DC stepper motors.

March 20, 2002 - Double E/Re web guiding system utilizes 3-zone system with zero point centered in dead zone. Dead zone is flanked by slow and standard zones. System adjusts web if it moves away from zero point into slow or standard zones in exact proportion to problem. DC stepper motor requires little or no maintenance. Options include digital microprocessor control panels and edge, center, and line guide sensors.

Brushless DC Stepper Motor Ensures Accurate Web Guiding

Double E / Re web guiding systems use brushless DC stepper motors to give precise control over web alignment. Other web guiding systems often use AC motors with brushes which lack the sophisticated monitoring and subsequent correction of a stepper system. An AC motor attempts to maintain alignment by moving toward the zero point, overshooting it, then moving toward it in the other direction. This methodology results in near constant movement of the web, as it fluctuates back and forth around the optimum position. Constant movement is unnecessary, potentially creating negative effects on product quality and maintenance requirements.

By contrast, the Double E / Re web guide uses a three-zone system with the zero point centered in the "dead zone". The dead zone is flanked by the "slow zone", and the "standard zone" falls beyond that. If the web moves away from the zero point into the slow zone, the system adjusts the web in exact proportion to the problem. The controller "knows" the zero point, and instructs the actuator to bring the web back exactly to that point, not beyond it. If a major event occurs and the web moves into the standard zone, the controller immediately brings the web back to the slow zone, then efficiently back to zero. The DC stepper motor requires little or no maintenance. There are no brushes to replace, and because the system minimizes movement, parts seldom wear out.

Double E / Re web guiding systems are available with many options including edge, center, and line guide sensors (activated by transmitted or reflected light, infrared or ultrasonic waves, or miniature cameras). Digital microprocessor control panels analyze the data and signal the correcting devices (linear shifting actuators, pivot frames, and steering rolls) to quickly and efficiently correct any alignment problems.
