Stretchy Wire accommodates needs of multiple industries.

October 21, 2009 - Elastomeric wire can stretch from 5-100% percent without loss of conductivity. It can be produced in 24-42 gauge wire range and is designed to application requirements for amount of stretchiness, gauge, and connector requirements. Product benefits various markets where wire stretch, comfort, and longevity are of concern, including medical systems, sports apparel, defense and homeland security applications, and entertainment devices.

Minnesota Wire Announces New Line of Developmental Products

Minnesota Wire announced today that it is offering a new line of developmental product to the wire and cable industry. Elastomeric or "stretchy" wire was developed over the past several years through the company's sizable government R&D grants that are fueling its commercialization efforts. The stretchy wire, for which a utility patent is pending, can stretch from 5 to 100 percent without loss of conductivity, and currently can be produced in the range of 24 to 42 gauge wire. The customer's application requirements ultimately determine the design parameters (amount of stretchy, gauge, connectorization, etc.), but Minnesota Wire believes that the stretchy wire can be beneficial to a variety of markets where wire stretch, comfort and longevity are increasingly important, including: medical systems; sports apparel; defense and homeland security applications; and entertainment devices.

The company is continuing its R&D work on elastomeric conductors with other novel properties, including non-metallic wire (using pure carbon nanotubes), and adding features for prognostic health management (PHM) for wire systems (for which another utility patent is pending).
