Exar Expands Its PowerBlox(TM) Line of High Voltage, High Current Step Down Converters

Optimized 12V Input Voltage Single Stage Conversion

FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 12 /-- Exar Corporation (NASDAQ:EXAR) unveiled today a new non-synchronous Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) step down converter with a maximum load current of two Amps and operating input voltage up to 25V. The XRP7657 is the latest addition to Exar's industry acclaimed PowerBlox family of high-voltage, high-current step-down regulators.

Optimized for a 12V input voltage rail, yet equally capable of operating from the popular 5V and 24V power rails, the XRP7657 addresses the needs for smaller footprint and substantial cost savings in cost sensitive applications. These include audio-video equipment like set-top boxes, telecom, computing peripherals and more generally distributed point of load conversions.

"This two Amp solution complements our existing three, six, eight and twelve Amp converters from Exar's PowerBlox family and is part of Exar's continuous effort to provide designers with higher performing, cost effective solutions for point of load conversions," said Eric Pittana, director of marketing, Power Product Line. "With its wide input voltage range, the XRP7657 can be easily integrated into numerous distributed power architectures as well as reused in multiple designs with varying input voltages."

Key Product Features

Reaching up to 94% efficiency in a compact "green" SOIC package, the XRP7657 operates at a fixed 420kHz switching frequency allowing for small external components. The output voltage can be adjusted down to 0.8V, with 2% accuracy, via two external resistors, which can be achieved from any single input voltage from 4.75V to 25V. This non-synchronous voltage mode PWM converter features an external type-III compensation for increased design flexibility of any point-of-load supply. Built-in soft-start, current limit and thermal shutdown protection provide the XRP7657 with fail-safe operations.

Power Management Products

Highly reliable, accurate, power management is a critical part of any technology system. Exar has a broad array of high-performance and industry-proven power management solutions including handset and lighting controls, power conversion, and standard linear devices.

Prices, Packages, Availability and Additional Information

The XRP7657 is available now in volume quantities in a RoHS compliant, halogen free 8-pin SOIC package. Pricing starts at $0.52 per unit for 1K pieces.
