Molex Announces the First Portable WoodheadŽ Flood Light for Hazardous Locations

Ranked industry first, class 1, division 1 rated as a truly portable wide area hazardous location worklight

LISLE, Ill. September 16, 2009- Molex Incorporated (NASDAQ: MOLX and MOLXA) introduces an industry first in its Woodhead lighting product line, the Hazardous Location Portable Flood Light. Portable, easy to re-lamp and re-wire, the worklight features two 300 watt halogen lamps that do not heat the enclosure above 160°C, a rubber (SOW) cordset and a hazardous location plug to provide optimum flexibility and portability in a multitude of hazardous location applications such as natural gas service utility locations, refineries, shipyards, fuel oil loading docks and petrochemical plants.

CSA approved and compliant to the US and Canadian standards for methane atmospheres, the new Woodhead Portable Flood Light is all about safety. Engineered to provide the ultimate in performance, reliability and safety, its key features are designed to directly address the need for safety and portability in explosive environments.

"A multitude of hazardous location applications will benefit from the safety features of this industry first lighting product. It can be used in applications such as worksites where natural gas leaks may occur while being repaired and maintained, in petrochemical plants during shut downs and operating maintenance procedures, and wherever outside contractors may do temporary work," said Scott Hagen, global product manager, commercial programs, Molex Incorporated. "Our extensive research and product reliability guarantee that this worklight is the ideal product when safe, wide area portable lighting is needed in hazardous areas."

Molex customer National Grid, an international energy delivery company and the largest distributor of natural gas in the northeastern U.S., is looking forward to using the product. Joseph Vitelli, principal engineer, National Grid said, "Safety is our top concern for our employees and the millions of customers we serve. We can't wait to begin using the Portable Flood Light. We feel that it will provide adequate safe lighting for our workers in hazardous areas, giving them a safer working environment and improving the quality of their jobs. This new product will drive down accident rates and improve loss time."

The Portable Flood Light's collapsible Tripod complements the worklight as its lightweight, yet sturdy companion. The shock absorbent ABS base support allows the legs to open to more than five feet in diameter when fully opened and the light heads have full three axis adjustable light heads, 360 degree directional range and a telescoping height - 50 to 64 inches - offering complete flexibility to light wide areas in challenging worksites. Both the worklight and the tripod are provided with convenient storage cases.

The Portable Flood Light's ratings include:
  • Class 1, Division 1, Group C&D
  • Compliant for methane atmospheres
  • Two 300 Watt Halogen lamps
  • NEMA, 1 2, 3R and 4x enclosures
  • Maximum surface temperature - 160°C (T3C)

All Woodhead electrical products are designed to perform reliably even in the toughest environments. The company's standard and custom-designed electrical solutions are used in industries such as automotive and aerospace manufacturing and maintenance, construction sites, food processing, utilities, petrochemical, pulp and paper processing, public facilities, shipyards and more.
