Broadcom Becomes World's First to Introduce Single Chip IAD with Integrated ADSL2+, 802.11n and DECT, Enabling Voice, Video, Data, and Wireless Bundled Services

New Single-Chip Solution Delivers High Speed ADSL2+ Connectivity with Complete Home Router Functionality

PARIS, Sept. 8 / -- (Broadband World Forum Europe 2009) -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced its first single chip broadband integrated access device (IAD) integrating high performance ADSL2+ and 802.11n wireless LAN (WLAN), along with Gigabit Ethernet switching, Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT), and voice over IP (VoIP) for IADs and high-end residential gateways. This new IAD solution provides OEMs with the lowest component count, size, power and cost, and enables service providers to offer a single device that delivers a fast Internet connection and robust DECT/DECT6.0/CAT-iq and Wi-Fi connectivity to support triple play services (voice, video and data). The integrated DSL+WLAN solution eliminates the need for consumers to purchase a separate DSL modem, wireless router and DECT cordless base station, significantly reducing the cost of home networking.

Broadcom has developed several innovative combination ('combo') chips that integrate multiple technologies onto a single monolithic silicon die, thus, enabling smaller and more efficient devices with a rich set of features. The new Broadcom BCM6362 is the first chip to combine the company's industry-leading ADSL2+ and Wi-Fi technologies. By using the new combo chip, modem manufacturers can eliminate more than 200 discrete components to streamline the design of IADs and reduce bill of material (BOM) cost by over 50 percent. The availability of more cost effective product designs is expected to further increase demand for wireless gateways - which is expected to represent 73 percent of the ADSL market by 2013, according to Dell'Oro Group industry research.

"The highly integrated BCM6362 ADSL2+ and 802.11n wireless LAN solution reaffirms that Broadcom is at the forefront of broadband system-on-chip integration technology, enabling our customers to deliver customer premise equipment with the best combination of performance available today," said Greg Fischer, Vice President & General Manager of Broadcom's Carrier Access line of business. "In turn, our customers can rapidly develop cost effective, low power system-level solutions for the ADSL+ Wi-Fi market."

The BCM6362 provides a fast, 'Always On' Internet connection that is easy to install and use. Its high performance wireless capabilities allow users to surf the Web, transfer files, and stream media content between PCs and consumer electronics devices throughout their homes - without the hassle of wires. Also featured is a six port Ethernet switch with four 10/100 Fast Ethernet and two gigabit ports that can be used as a high performance routed local area network (LAN) and to connect set-top boxes, printers, storage drives and other products to the network, so they can access and share content with all connected devices.

The product family provides unparalleled levels of integration utilizing Broadcom's high performance 400 MHz dual core processor architecture, hardware-assisted wirespeed bridging and routing, hardware assisted IPsec security for virtual private network (VPN) termination, gigabit switching, and support for USB 2.0 host and devices.

The BCM6362 features Broadcom's latest 2x2 802.11n core, which offers best-in-class range and throughput to support the video, voice and data services that broadband providers are offering to subscribers. The WLAN subsystem includes Accelerange(TM) technology, a unique set of hardware and software enhancements that provide more reliable wireless connections to PCs and media devices that are far from the home's broadband connection. It also features a high-speed processor, high-output power amplifiers and other optimizations to deliver maximum throughput - even during times of heavy DSL usage, which can slow down older wireless systems.

Additionally, Broadcom's 802.11n radio supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz operation, enabling manufacturers to build dual-band gateways that provide even more flexibility and capacity for wireless users. Dual-band gateways are increasingly popular as more Wi-Fi users dedicate the less crowded 5 GHz portion of their wireless networks for video streaming and VoIP calls, and use the 2.4 GHz band for traditional data applications.

To enhance users' VoIP experience, and to further eliminate the need for corded POTS handsets, the BCM6362 integrates a CAT-iq DECT core for HD voice, multi-line cordless VoIP and internet connectivity.

The BCM6362's integrated ADSL2+ transceiver and analog front end (AFE) supports full-rate ADSL2+ connectivity that conforms to all International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and American National Standard Institute (ANSI) ADSL2+ specifications. It is also a low power solution that adheres to the regulations set forth by The European Code of Conduct on Energy Efficiency with best-of-class power consumption and management of low power modes.

To round out the BCM6362's capabilities, Broadcom also provides integrated software that enables carriers to add their own applications on top of this complete solution for further seamless integration, enabling faster time-to-market for carriers.
