Short Bowl Decanter sedimentation centrifuge for stage #1 lactose dewatering position features overhung bowl and scroll with bearing support at drive end only, allowing for simpified inspection after CIP cleaning by removing bolts on front cover to see discharge end of bowl and scroll. Removable inspection panels on housing allow for visual inspection of outside of bowl and shaft and seal area between back of bowl and product housing back partition.
In 1992, the Lactose De-watering and Drying Process Industry in the United States was revolutionized with the introduction of the TEMA USDA Accepted Design, Continuous Filtering Centrifuge for the Stage #2 position. Prior to this, the Best Practical Technology available for continuous centrifuging of Stage #2 lactose was a traditional double pillow block bearing decanter centrifuge.
It was not long before U.S. Lactose Producers realized that the new TEMA centrifuge was the Best Available Technology for the Stage #2 position. It dramatically outperformed the traditional decanters by delivering a much lower free moisture lactose, typically 4-8% to the dryers which required much less energy to dry. In addition to this, time proved that the TEMA was less costly to operate and maintain.
Noticeable differences were the new TEMA drastically reduced the amount of oversize, hard lactose pellets that had been being produced when wetter lactose crystals coming out of the decanters clumped together and their agglomerated wetter surfaces were flash dried as they fell into the hot dryer. This condition was virtually eliminated because the lower free moisture coming from the TEMA allowed the dryer to run at a more uniform and stable temperature which resulted in not only significant energy savings but actually contributed to putting more good lactose powder in the bag per hour of production.
No question, the most important aspect of the TEMA is it's over hung design. It has support bearings on the drive end only. This unique feature allowed its wet end to be designed by following the USDA Guidelines for The Sanitary Design and Fabrication of Dairy Processing Equipment. The end result was the TEMA was completely C-I-P capable and it can be quickly and easily disassembled and reassembled after inspections or maintenance.
After several years of discussion and development, TEMA and its sister company, Siebtechnik in Germany, have produced a (SBD style) Short Bowl Decanter sedimentation centrifuge for the Stage #1 lactose de-watering position. It is designed and patterned after the successful TEMA Stage #2 unit. It too has an overhung bowl and scroll with bearing support at the drive end only. This makes the SBD totally user friendly from the stand point of accessibility for inspection after C-I-P cleaning by simply, removing the bolts on the front cover in order see the discharge end of the bowl and scroll. Also, removable inspection panels on the housing at strategic locations allows for visual inspection of the outside of the bowl and the shaft and seal area between the back of the bowl and the product housing back partition.
Its robust construction has proven to be very reliable and after several months of operation both in the USA and Europe, we are completely confident that the SBD style unit would be a very good addition to your lactose de-watering process.
