Analog Devices Unveils Single-Package Solution for Medical-Grade Data and Power Isolation

- New iCoupler® digital isolation products provide quad-channel data isolation and 500mW power isolation with 5-kV rms isolation rating; new devices reduce both cost and board space by up to 50 percent.

Norwood, MA (05/13/2009) - Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors for signal-processing applications, today expanded its broad portfolio of digital isolation products with a family of four-channel devices that meet stringent medical-grade specifications for data and power isolation in patient monitoring and other medical equipment. Each device integrates ADI's iCoupler® digital isolation technology and proprietary isoPower® dc-to-dc converter, providing both isolated power and isolated signal channels within a single package. These new iCoupler quad-channel isolators are a better choice over discrete solutions, such as optocouplers with external dc-to-dc converters, because they can both cut costs and reduce board space by as much as 50 percent, and speed time-to-market.

About the ADuM640x Quad-Channel Isolator Family

The ADuM640x quad-channel isolator family includes the ADuM6400, ADuM6401, ADuM6402, ADuM6403, and ADuM6404 digital isolation products. The quad-channel isolators offer 5-kV rms medical-grade isolation (IEC 60601-1 approvals pending) and four independent isolation channels in various channel configurations and data rates. The onboard isoPower isolated dc-to-dc converter provides up to 500 mW of regulated, isolated power and can operate at either 5.0 V or 3.3 V. This eliminates the need for a separate, isolated dc-to-dc converter in low-power, isolated designs. The ADuM640x also includes a thermal shutdown feature to ensure safe operation. For more information, please visit http://www.analog.com/pr/ADuM640x.

Also now available is the ADuM440x family of quad-channel digital isolators that feature enhanced system-level ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection with 5-kV rms medical-grade isolation (IEC 60601-1 approvals pending). The ADuM440x family includes the ADuM4400, ADuM4401, and ADuM4402 digital isolation products that differ by channel configuration. For more information, please visit http://www.analog.com/ADuM440x.

iCoupler® Technology

With more than 250 million channels deployed, ADI's proven iCoupler technology is based on chip-scale transformers, rather than on the LEDs and photodiodes found in optocouplers. Transformers support higher data rates, consume less power, and are more stable over life as compared to LEDs and photodiodes. By fabricating the transformers directly on-chip using wafer-level processing, iCoupler channels can be integrated with each other and other semiconductor functions at low cost. iCoupler transformers are planar structures formed from CMOS and gold metal layers. A high breakdown polyimide layer underneath the gold layer insulates the top transformer coil from the bottom. CMOS circuits connected to the top coil and bottom coil provide the interface between each transformer and its external signals.

isoPower DC-to-DC Converter

iCoupler digital isolators condition and drive data across transformers. ADI's isoPower dc-to-dc converter uses the same chip-scale transformer technology, but instead of transmitting data, isoPower employs switches, rectifiers, and regulators to generate power that is isolated to the same degree as the data channels.
