UV Laser delivers over 150 mW of TEM00 output.

August 7, 2009 - Suited for flow cytometry and other live-cell bio applications, Genesis(TM) 355-150 S is based on optically pumped semiconductor laser technology. Unit offers true CW source of 355 nm UV laser light, avoiding potential high peak power problems arising from quasi CW lasers. With low output noise and single spatial output mode, laser is also suited for egg and fertilized-egg sorting as well as fluorescence-based applications, such as confocal microscopy.

New UV Laser Offers Highest Power Yet for True CW Output

Santa Clara, Calif., June 2, 2009 - The new Genesis(TM) 355-150 S from Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) sets a new power record for true CW ultraviolet solid-state performance, delivering over 150 milliwatts of TEM00 output for flow cytometry and other live-cell bio applications. This new laser, as with all other Genesis 355 series lasers, is based on the company's patented optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology, which has become the technology of choice in many biomedical applications for visible wavelengths. This new laser is a true CW source of 355 nm UV laser light avoiding the potential high peak power problems arising from older quasi CW lasers. With low output noise and a single spatial output mode (M2 <1.2), the new Genesis 355-150 S laser is ideal for high-throughput applications needing best signal-to-noise ratio data.

The high power of the Genesis 355-150 S is intended to increase the throughput of live cell applications including flow cytometry, such as egg and fertilized-egg sorting, where the peak power of alternative, modelocked lasers poses significant risk of mutagenic damage to the DNA in the sorted cells. It is also an excellent source for other fluorescence-based applications, including confocal microscopy, where its short wavelength and low M2 beam provide optimum excitation of Hoechst and Indo dyes. Moreover, these confocal microscopes often rely on fiber delivery which can be problematic for the high peak power levels of quasi CW lasers.

Founded in 1966, Coherent, Inc. is a Russell 2000 Index company and a world leader in providing laser-based solutions to the commercial and scientific research markets.
