Webra - New Water and Air Coolers for Converters

Martinsried, 05-12-2009 - For a variety of new converters and inverters in wind power, traction and industry applications Webra presents customized cooling solutions - among which are water coolers for 62 mm IGBT modules, SKiiP, Primepack, 130x140 and 140x190 mm modules each in different configurations as well as universal coolers for mounting of different module sizes. For medium voltage applications in press pack stacks new water coolers for disc cell diameters up to 115 mm and clamping force up to 150 kN were developed. For the standard Semikron SKiiP air cooler profile a reduction of the thermal resistance by 10% was achieved through a modified fin geometry. For press pack heat sinks a new version with 135 mm height is available.

"New converters with special requirements are being developed across Europe," says Dr. Konrad Laufs, Division Manager of AMS Technologies. "Cooling IGBT-modules or press pack disc cells plays an important role: the thermal performance of heat sinks or water coolers limits the power semiconductors, the fluid dynamics determine size and cost of other components such as fans, pumps or heat exchangers."

For the Webra water coolers different fluid channel structures are being used, such as meander-like channels, pin fins or channels in counter flow. The employed production technology, friction stir weld, guarantees a safe, contamination free, extremely mechanically resistant and cost effective seal.

Webra with its decades of experience in thermo- and fluid dynamics and in production processes is specialized in developing and manufacturing customized solutions in terms of module configuration, flow, thermal performance, pressure drop, mechanical strength and cost.
