Starrett Introduces Large-Format Video Measurement Systems for Increased Speed, Accuracy & Affordability

New Systems Feature Innovative Design for Reduced Maintenance, Greater Productivity & Cost-Savings.

ATHOL, MASSACHUSETTS U.S.A. (July 20, 2009) - The L.S. Starrett Company has introduced a line of affordable Large-Format Multi-Sensor Video Measurement Systems ranging from 12" (305mm) to 50" (1273mm) of X-Y travel and 8" (200mm) of Z travel. The new Large-Format Series offers increased speed at more than 25" of travel per second and greater accuracy to more than 4µm (157.5µin) to verify critical dimensions on complex, multi-featured parts. Models including the LF303, LF463, LF713, LF963 and LF1273 are available with vision, contact probe and laser scanning attachments. The Large-Format systems can be configured to meet a variety of measurement needs in QC labs, research, engineering or manufacturing environments.

Exceptional measuring accuracy / repeatability and outstanding throughput results are the outcome of unique design features such as transports that are driven by sophisticated, no-maintenance, balanced linear motors (versus drives) which are close-looped to precision scales in all three axes. The motors generate no heat and position to a small fraction of a micron. In addition, the new systems are the industry's first in their category to offer porous carbon air-bearings for quiet, frictionless motion requiring no lubrication or maintenance and resulting in superb repeatability greater than 3µm (120µin) . The moving axes of the systems are center-driven to reduce asymmetric thrust and eliminate the necessity of a separate (slave) scale, enhancing performance and measuring consistency. The systems also include a massive granite base and bridge, which provides exceptional mechanical and thermal stability.

For optimum accuracy and efficiency, all axes feature "tape scales" in 1/10th µm (4µin) which are bonded directly to the granite structure of the machine. These scales are the most advanced on the market, featuring quasi-absolute encoder markings to streamline the "homing" sequence.

"Starrett is clearly at the forefront of technology by incorporating an air-bearing design in the new Large-Format Video Measurement Systems as well as other unique features like a touch probe including a spotter camera," said Mr. Mark Arenal, Managing Director of Starrett Kinemetric Engineering Division. "The new systems offer our customers unmatched speed and accuracy at a cost savings in a high performance multi-sensor metrology solution."

The Large-Format Video Systems offer high accuracy at E2=1.5+5L/1,000 and an Encoder Resolution of 0.1µm (4µin). A color optical system provides a zoom magnification ratio of 12:1 with programmable magnifications to 2000x via auxiliary lenses. An LED illuminator or triple output fiber-optic, ring light and co-axial illumination provides exceptional lighting. The system includes a 22" widescreen and flat panel LCD display. For maximum operator performance, the Large-Format Systems include an adjustable ergonomic workstation including a compact control panel and standard keyboard.

Options and accessories include:
- Dark field simulated LED ring light; quadrant and Z-height controllable
- Programmable LED bottom lighting for illumination of edges and thru-holes,
- Z-Trac lighting module for independent control of incident angle / height for edge enhancement
- Spotter camera with magnified, color view of contact probe
- Renishaw PH6 contact probe with TP20 module
- Optimet® Mark III Laser Probe.

Industry-leading Metronics Quadra-Chek® QC-5000 3-D Metrology Software is offered with video edge detection and full CNC control. Utilizing the familiar MS Windows® operating system, QC-5000 software is full-featured and intuitive. It allows you to obtain, store, manage and distribute precision measurement data directly from the lab or the shop floor.

Since it's founding over 125 years ago, The L.S. Starrett Company has earned a reputation as the world's pre-eminent supplier of precision measuring tools and equipment.
