Waterborne Resin suits wood and furniture coatings.

July 15, 2009 - Bayhydrol AH XP 2741 high-molecular-weight, polyacrylate dispersion is solvent-free and is suited for formulation of low- to no-VOC, 1-component coatings for indoor wood floors and furniture. Clearcoats formulated with styrene-acrylate copolymer resin accentuate wood grain and provide chemical resistance. Resin can be used to formulate primers, high-gloss or semi-gloss coatings, and in combination with polyurethane dispersions and UV-cured coatings.

Bayer MaterialScience Introduces New Waterborne Dispersion for Wood and Furniture Coatings

Broad range of resins developed to satisfy a myriad of requirements

Pittsburgh, July 14, 2009 - Bayer MaterialScience has introduced a new member of its proven line of Bayhydrol® products for one-component coating systems. The new addition is Bayhydrol AH XP 2741, the first of a new range of high-molecular-weight, polyacrylate dispersions for coating wood and furniture.

The new Bayhydrol AH XP 2741 resin, which is solvent-free, is particularly well suited for the formulation of low- to no-VOC, one-component coatings for indoor wood floors and furniture. Clearcoats formulated with this waterborne styrene-acrylate copolymer highly accentuate the wood's grain and provide good chemical resistance. This universal resin can be used to easily formulate primers and high-gloss or semi-gloss coatings. It can be used in combination with polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) as well as UV-cured coatings.

"Introducing this new polyacrylate dispersion enables Bayer to offer yet one more solution for developing long lasting, tough floor and furniture coatings," said Pete Schmitt, a Bayer MaterialScience LLC expert for waterborne coating systems. "It once again extends our ability to offer formulators a new tool to meet the ever higher expectations of today's high performance coatings."

Ultra Green Bayhydrol UH PUDs with renewable content

"Generally, coatings formulated with PUD resins offer high mechanical strength, which makes them ideal for use on all types of wood floors," Schmitt continued. "For instance, the addition of high-molecular-weight, fatty acid-modified Bayhydrol UH 2557 and 2593/1 polyurethane raw materials enable coatings to dry quickly, be highly resistant to black heel marks and accentuate the wood's grain." When used in combination with waterborne UV-cure PUDs and two-component waterborne coatings, Bayhydrol UH 2593/1 PUD accelerates drying and thus can contribute to increased productivity during the coating process. Schmitt added, "The renewable content of Bayhydrol UH 2557 resin is 7 percent and the renewable content of Bayhydrol XP 2593/1 resin is 9 percent."

Bayer's Bayhydrol UH 2558 resin, which can be used effectively with polyacrylate resins, helps produce coatings that are particularly flexible, yet are scratch, mar and chemical resistant. The addition of only 2.5 percent diethyleneglycol monobutylether is required for optimal film formation on wood at room temperature. That is only about one-quarter of the co-solvent required for a formulation based on a comparable resin containing N-methylpyrolidinone (NMP).

All of these polyurethane dispersions from Bayer's Bayhydrol UH line are very compatible with other waterborne resins such as polyacrylate systems. The already outstanding chemical and alkali resistance of coating systems formulated with them can be further enhanced by crosslinking with polyisocyanates. The combination of Bayhydrol UH XP 2719 PUD with polyol dispersions in two-component formulations improves both the drying time and flexibility of the coating. "Polyurethane dispersions offer incredible flexibility to today's formulators," Schmitt added. "Used alone or in combination with other resins, they really raise the bar of performance possibilities."

As with any product, use of any of the Bayhydrol UH resins mentioned, in a given application must be tested (including but not limited to field testing) in advance by the user to determine suitability.
