Toshiba Adds Complete System Backup and Password-Protected Encryption to Personal Storage Line

New Features on Toshiba's Portable Hard Drives Make Storing and Protecting Digital Data Easier than Ever

IRVINE, Calif., June 23 / -- Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD), the industry pioneer in small form factor hard disk drives (HDDs), today introduced the next generation of its USB 2.0 portable hard drives, featuring complete system backup, password-protected encryption for added security and enhanced software features. The Toshiba Portable Hard Drives provide a comprehensive and easy-to-use solution to increase protection against computer failure and unauthorized access to data.

"We are approaching a divide with digital content - on the one hand we have a tremendous amount of important digital files being stored each day; however, according to our research, there is much confusion on the urgency to back up these crucial files and how to ensure consumers are protected in case of a computer problem," said Chris Ely, senior research analyst, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). "Based on our survey data, the majority of consumers want the peace of mind to have complete backup, as opposed to only select files."(1)

Toshiba's easy-to-use portable hard drives take the complexity out of computer backup. These new personal storage products now feature software specifically customized for the Windows and Mac environments.

For Windows users, Toshiba is the first storage manufacturer to include NTI(R) BackupNow EZ(TM) software, which allows users to backup their complete system with a single click. NTI BackupNow EZ enables the user to restore the complete system, even if Windows is unable to start. In addition, the software will scan a user's system and provide personalized recommendations on the best coverage for files, folders and the entire computer.

For Mac users, Toshiba's new backup drives come bundled with NTI Shadow(TM) 4 for Mac, enabling users to easily identify files and folders to back up and select a convenient schedule for storage. Toshiba's external hard drives also are compatible with Apple's Time Machine right out of the box.

On both the Windows and Mac software platforms, Toshiba has added a password-protected security option with up to 256-bit encryption to address the growing need for data protection, giving consumers more peace of mind in securing their digital content from unauthorized access. A new Drive Space Alert feature monitors the backup hard drive's capacity and signals users when storage capacity is running low.

Toshiba's new personal storage products also include features for both first-time and advanced users. For first time users, intuitive graphics and controls make backing up digital data easier than ever, putting consumers in the driver's seat for all of their storage needs. In addition, advanced users have the ability to customize their backup preferences, such as the frequency, level of security and types of files saved.

"We've increased the level of protection offered by our personal storage products, while making them easier to use," said Manuel Camarena, product manager for consumer storage at Toshiba Storage Device Division. "Data backup usually isn't a consumer's first thought, but it is the most important consideration for preserving a lifetime of digital memories, entertainment libraries and the entire computer system. Enhanced backup features combined with password-protected encryption create a true digital safety net that any consumer can use to protect against system failure and unauthorized access to their digital content."

High-Capacity, Contemporary Portable Storage Products

Available in 500GB(2) and 320GB(2) capacities, Toshiba's new portable storage products provide consumers with storage for up to 142,000 digital photos, 131,000 digital music files, or 410 downloaded digital movies(2). These new products are available in an array of color choices, such as Vivid White, Liquid Blue, Komodo Green and Rocket Red.

Powered via USB 2.0, Toshiba's rugged, small and light personal storage products are built for portability. Weighing a mere six ounces and the approximate size of a postcard, these portable hard drives can withstand daily wear and tear with special features such as an internal shock sensor, ramp-loading technology and anti-slip footpads to help anchor the drive in place.

The new 500GB Toshiba Portable Hard Drive is priced at $149.99 (MSRP), while the 320GB version is priced at $119.99 (MSRP). Both are available now at www.toshibadirect.com and through major retailers and online outlets. 1. CEA Market Research Report "Amassing Digital Fortunes: A Digital Storage Study" March 2008. According the study, over half of those surveyed (52%) are either not sure or are not backing-up, meaning they do not have duplicate copies of their files stored in separate places. The survey stated that only 21% said they would prefer a backup process that took less time but only included some of the files, compared with 63% who preferred more complete coverage. Thus, the amount of time required to backup overall may not be as much a barrier as the amount of files one is able to backup.

2. One Gigabyte (1 GB) means 10(9) = 1,000,000,000 bytes using powers of 10. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1 GB = 2(30) = 1,073,741,824 bytes, and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system. Examples of the number of photos, songs, movies, and any other files that can be stored on a hard drive are provided for illustrative purposes only. Your results will vary based on file size and format, settings, features, operating system, software and other factors.

3. RoHS Compatible: This product is compatible with European Union Directive 2002/95/EC. Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS), which restricts use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE.
