AEM Represents Member Companies at Senate Green Technology/Jobs Policy Summit

Dennis Slater, president of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), attended an invitation-only Senate Democratic Green Jobs Summit on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. He was invited to the summit by Harry Reid, U.S. Senate Majority Leader, and Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), chair of the Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee .

More than 60 green technology businesses, educators, labor leaders and industry organizations attended the summit, which focused on identifying opportunities for industry and the economy by investments in "green energy" and creating clean energy jobs.

Vice President Joe Biden delivered the keynote address at the summit, which featured remarks and panel discussions from Democratic Senators and green technology leaders, including Barbara Boxer (D-CA), chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and Deputy Secretary of Energy, Daniel Poneman.

Slater, along with other business, public interest and labor leaders, participated in panel discussions with Senators, Administration officials and business leaders on creating jobs in a "green" economy. Slater said that for AEM and its members, there were several promising opportunities aired at the summit, including energy efficiency in factories, production and supply chains; 2) construction of energy sites, including wind farm and other green energy site land development and erection, energy grid improvements; 3) recycling and waste management; 4) renewable energy including forestry and ag products as biofuel and 5) energy efficient transportation networks through the proper funding of the nation's transportation infrastructure.

"Our members and the industry sectors we serve have an important role to play in the development of green technologies that will lead to improved energy independence, job creation and a stronger economy while at the same time will have a positive impact on the environment," Slater stated. "America's industrial equipment manufacturers, including AEM member companies, are already driving progress here, and we look forward to working with the Administration and the Congress to ensure a strong manufacturing base in this century and beyond."

AEM is the North American-based international trade group serving the off-road equipment manufacturing industry. AEM members number over 800 companies that manufacture equipment, products and services used worldwide in the agriculture, construction, forestry, mining, and utility sectors.
