New SolarBeeŽ Chlorine Boost System for Potable Water Tanks Improves Water Quality, Meets EPA Disinfection Requirement

"Fast Response, Early Boost" approach keeps potable water quality safe.

Dickinson, ND - June 10, 2009 - A safe, effective and easy-to-use chlorine injection system from SolarBeeŽ, Inc. helps improve water quality in potable water storage tanks and achieve compliance with EPA Stage 2 disinfection byproduct (DBP) rules. Designed for use with SolarBee water mixing equipment, the portable system "boosts" chlorinated and chloraminated water tanks with sodium hypochlorite to keep residual chlorine levels optimal.

Mixing a potable drinking water tank with SolarBee solar-powered circulators has many benefits, but sometimes intervention beyond just mixing is required to keep the water quality high.

The Chlorine Boost System is especially effective during warm months when problems associated with rapid growth of ammonia oxidizing bacteria are most acute.

The SolarBee Chlorine Boost System helps solve nitrification and loss-of-residual problems that occur in up to two-thirds of chloramine-treated tanks. "Mixing a potable drinking water tank with SolarBee solar-powered circulators has many benefits, but sometimes intervention beyond just mixing is required to keep the water quality high," said Joel Bleth, president, SolarBee. "The Chlorine Boost System is especially effective during warm months when problems associated with rapid growth of ammonia oxidizing bacteria are most acute."

"Fast Response, Early Boost"

The SolarBee Chlorine Boost System is based on a "Fast Response, Early Boost" method of tank management. Tank managers have only a short period of time to respond and boost chlorine when water quality sampling indicates water deterioration. When water quality problems aren't addressed promptly, the tank may need to be taken offline, drained completely and refilled. By catching a tank in "fast response" time, operators can correct its chemistry quickly, efficiently and safely.

Boosting is done from ground level, eliminating the need to climb a water tank or handle dangerous chemicals at heights. In an above-ground water tank, an intake hose extends from the SolarBee circulator down to ground level, where the hose is attached to the portable boost system. Sodium hypochlorite is directed into the tank at the required amount, where it is immediately mixed into the water.

Circulation based on unique technology

SolarBee circulators feature unique, Long-Distance Circulation(TM) (LDC) technology that keeps the tank de-stratified and provides uniform water age, which in turn improves residual chlorine levels and reduces nitrification. In addition, the unique SolarBee flow pattern ensures consistent dispersion of disinfectant throughout the tank volume, including constant replacement at the boundary layers (i.e, both bottom sediment layers and sidewalls) where bacterial growth would otherwise use up the chlorine.

The safe, portable chlorine boost unit fits easily on the back of a pickup truck, allowing the user to treat multiple storage tanks during a single day. Secondary-containment is integrated into the unit, which includes a 20-gallon sodium hypochlorite holding tank, 5-gallon rinse tank and 3/8-inch flexible teflon chemical hose. A high-performance double-diaphragm pump is used to inject the sodium hypochlorite into the water tank, and then to flush the injection hose.

About SolarBee

SolarBee, Inc., a division of Medora Environmental, Inc., manufactures and installs solar-powered long-distance water circulators. Introduced in 2001, there are now more than 20 models, including 7 models for potable water tanks ranging from 0.1 to 100.0 million gallon (MG) tanks. SolarBee circulators are used to solve water-quality problems worldwide in potable and recycled water storage tanks, freshwater lakes, wastewater lagoons, storm-water ponds, estuaries, and other reservoirs.
