Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud Gets an Upgrade

Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud 3.0 adds new ease-of-use, Java development and Sun Cloud support

SAN FRANCISCO, June 1 /-- Today at the CommunityOne West conference, Vertica announced an upgrade to its Vertica(R) Analytic Database for the Cloud that brings all the new features of the recently announced Vertica 3.0 platform to cloud computing customers. The new version also adds improved Java development capabilities, support for Sun's forthcoming Sun Cloud, and a number of new ease-of-use and management features.

Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud 3.0 is an on-demand version of the company's blazingly fast MPP columnar database hosted on cloud computing services such as Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), as well as upcoming cloud computing services from Sun and Rackspace. The new cloud version offers all the features and capabilities of the enterprise version of the Vertica Analytic Database, but with the convenience of a hosted offering.

This pay-as-you-go offering enables companies to create scalable, high-performance analytic data warehouses and business intelligence (BI) data marts without huge upfront data center costs and delays. All the software applications, servers, security, networking and storage are provisioned automatically and maintained on an as-needed basis by the cloud platform provider. The cloud scales on-demand -- additional servers are added to a customer's cluster as workloads demand.

"Partnering with Vertica enables us to jointly provide users with easier, faster and more affordable access to business analytics," said Juan Carlos Soto, Vice President of Marketing, Cloud Computing at Sun Microsystems. "Offering Vertica on the Sun Cloud will enable users to analyze massive amounts of data faster to drive competitive advantage."

In addition to support for the upcoming Sun Cloud, the new version has been enhanced to work with Amazon EC2 as either a public Amazon Machine Image (AMI) or via Vertica's own cloud computing portal for customers who don't have an Amazon Web Services (AWS) account. These options offer customers flexibility and simplicity in how they deploy their cloud solution.

To make cloud computing even easier, Vertica for the Cloud 3.0 also sports new easy-to-use Web-based administration tools, pre-configured unixODBC drivers, and a one-click Windows Data Source Names (DSNs) creator that lets users easily create and modify DSNs at runtime.

The new version is also better for developers of Java BI applications. It features fast loading JDBC drivers and higher performance streaming of large data volumes to Java server-side data warehouses.

"We're seeing growing demand for analytics in the cloud in a wide range of industries, from healthcare to financial services and marketing analytics," said Omer Trajman, Vertica's Senior Director for Cloud and Virtualization. "And with support for new cloud platforms and enhanced administration and Java development tool integration in Vertica 3.0, we look forward to helping many more customers benefit from the performance and economics of analytic data management in the cloud."

Vertica for the Cloud is the only analytic database designed to be as elastic as the cloud. Its unique shared-nothing architecture, aggressive data compression and grid-based failover and recovery make it uniquely suited to process terabytes of data fast and economically on a 24x7 basis.

Version 3.0 includes dozens of new features that make it the best available cloud-based data warehousing platform for a wide variety of industries and applications. These include enhanced analytic capabilities, such as support for SQL-99 analytic functions and new data types. SQL analytics enable users to create more powerful queries. It is also the first cloud-based analytic database to automatically analyze and optimize its performance. A new function continuously monitors its workload to determine the best way for the database engine to access the data. The result is a highly adaptive analytic database that automatically responds to changing user demands.

Pricing and Availability

Vertica Analytic Database for the Cloud 3.0 is available immediately for a special limited time offer of $500 per month for 500 GB. This special promotion ends August 1, 2009. Visit http://www.vertica.com/cloud for more information. Vertica also offers an enterprise version of the Vertica Analytic Database.

Come see it in action at CommunityOne West booth # 308F.
