Data Logger permits multiple logs to be recorded/read back.

June 5, 2009 - Supporting NAND, NOR, serial NOR, and arrays, smxFLog(TM) flash logger works with flash memory of any size. It is power-fail safe and offers memory of 2-4 KB code and 32-288 bytes of RAM, but provides wear leveling, bad-block handling, read back and verify, and block erase. Write speed/read speed are over 69%/86% of raw flash speed, respectively. Minimum record size can be adjusted to characteristics of flash device and each log can stop at end of partition or overwrite oldest information.

Micro Digital Announces Flash Logger Upgrade

Costa Mesa, California - May 22, 2009 - Micro Digital Inc. (www.smxrtos.com) is pleased to announce enhancement of its smxFLog(TM) flash logger to permit multiple logs to be recorded and read back, thus making it more like a conventional file system. FAT file systems are not good for logging data to flash because flash, unlike magnetic media, cannot be overwritten without first erasing it. The erase operation is slow and must be done in large blocks (32K bytes or more.) Logging a small amount of data can result in moving and rewriting three blocks for data, FAT, and directory. This is very inefficient, slow, and may wear out the flash device prematurely.

smxFLog is designed to permit efficient, fast, reliable logging of data to flash memory. It supports all types of flash memory - NAND, NOR, serial NOR, and arrays - and works with flash memory of any size. It is ideally suited to the basic nature of flash memory, as it does not attempt to do anything fancy, just log the data. Furthermore it is power-fail safe and smxFLog is well-suited to applications where high reliability is a must, such as down-hole instruments, engine monitoring, etc - anywhere that requires reliable, unattended logging of data to flash memory. smxFLog also has a very small memory footprint: 2 to 4KB code and 32 to 288 bytes of RAM, yet it provides wear leveling, bad-block handling, read back and verify, block erase, and optional ECC (Error Check Code). Write speed is over 69% of raw flash speed and read speed is over 86% of raw flash speed. Minimum record size can be adjusted to the characteristics of the flash device. Each log can either stop at the end of its partition or loop back and overwrite the oldest information.

Pricing and Availability

smxFLog is available now. The price for a single-product, royalty-free license is $2,500, including one low-level flash driver. smxFLog is compatible with and can be used in combination with other Micro Digital file products such as smxFS FAT file system and smxFFS flash file system. It can also be used with the smxUSB family of USB products. For further information see www.smxrtos.com/fs.
