Antitheft Systems allow retailers to openly display products.

May 20, 2009 - Sensormatic safers with Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) capabilities help retailers protect wide range of high-theft products, such as batteries, razor blades, and ink cartridges. Offering double security setup, safers lock product in secure housing to keep thieves from goods, and also include EAS element that triggers alarms of Sensormatic detection systems if product is stolen. With system, retailers have options for open, yet secure merchadise presentations.

ADT's New Sensormatic Safers Allow Retailers to Openly Display a Wide Range of High-Theft Items While Guarding Against Theft and Preserving Customer Convenience

Industry Studies Support the Need for Retailers to Embrace Multi-Layered Anti-Theft Solutions That Can Help Enhance Customer Experience And Improve Retail Profits

SINGAPORE, May 6 / / - ADT announced today a comprehensive new line of Sensormatic safers with Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) capabilities. Also known as "keepers," this retail solution can help retailers protect a wide-range of high-theft products, such as batteries, razor blades, fragrances, DVDs, ink cartridges and health and beauty care items. To prevent theft, retailers often keep these types of products protected behind counters or in locked cabinets that are inaccessible to customers without store employee assistance. With Sensormatic safers, however, retailers can give shoppers the freedom to openly select and purchase items on their own. In turn, a more convenient display of merchandise can create a more satisfying customer experience, which is vital to retail profits. The Sensormatic line of safers is available through ADT in most countries in Asia-Pacific, UK, Europe and Latin America, then later this year in North America.

According to the 2008 Global Retail Theft Barometer, worldwide shrink amounted to almost US$105 billion last year. This figure includes the theft of popular, smaller items that are easily-concealed and offer high resale street value. In a study from Retail Systems Research, "Loss Prevention and Beyond: Survival of the Fittest," sponsored by ADT's Sensormatic Solutions, retailers were asked about their most important loss prevention tools. In addition to giving video surveillance high rankings, 89 percent of respondents rated "low- tech" theft deterrents like safers as one of the critical tools in their arsenal. Together with acousto-magnetic EAS solutions, these technologies can offer retailers an important multi-layered approach to stopping theft.

Sensormatic safers provide retailers double security with two forms of protection. First, a safer locks the product in a secure housing that keeps thieves from the goods. Second, each Sensormatic safer includes an EAS element that will trigger the alarms of Sensormatic detection systems, should a thief try leaving the store with a safer-protected product. Sensormatic safers offer retailers many options for open yet secure merchandise presentations as safer- protected goods can be easily stacked on shelves or hung on pegged displays.

Recent research supports the cost-effectiveness offered by safers according to the study from the October 2008 Impact Workshop hosted by the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) for over 70 executives from leading retailers and asset protection companies.

"In this latest field research project, safers/keepers were found to provide important sales boosts and loss reduction," stated Dr. Read Hayes, Director of the LPRC. "Customer interviews also found shoppers either don't notice or prefer safers/keepers to standard displays or behind the counter (displays) where they have to take time to look for a salesperson to assist in obtaining the product. The research further revealed safers/keepers were found to provide a positive ROI on (razor) blade product protection."

Saving the customer time and providing shopping convenience through open merchandising are key ways for retailers to sharpen their competitive edge and build profits. The Sensormatic line of safers adds to a broad portfolio of solutions to enhance the customer experience while deterring theft.

"As retailers combat the global issue of shrink for frequently pilfered merchandise, they are looking for an effective solution to ensure a more satisfying shopping experience and to help improve their bottom line. ADT's new Sensormatic safer platform offers retailers superior protection and optimal merchandising options for high shrink items while preserving customer convenience," according to Gary Chan, Vice President of Retail Security for ADT Security, Asia-Pacific.
