May 4, 2009 - Designed for front surface protection applications, custom-fabricated Sapphire Optics include windows up to 8 in. dia ranging from 1/8-½ in. thick with 70:1 aspect ratio and domes up to 6 in. dia with 160° included angles. Featuring up to 85% transmission uncoated and less than .25% reflection per surface with A/R coatings, Sapphire Windows have surface finishes to 60-40 scratch-dig. Domes feature surface accuracy to less than 1 fringe at 633 nm and finishes to 20-10 scratch-dig.

Sapphire Optics Protect Military Guidance Systems


Custom fabricated sapphire front surface optics that include large windows and domes for military navigation and targeting systems are available from Meller Optics, Inc. of Providence, Rhode Island.

Meller Sapphire Optics for military front surface protection applications include windows up to 8" dia., ranging from 1/8" to 1/2" thick with a 70:1 aspect ratio and domes up to 6" dia. with 160° included angles, depending upon configuration. Providing optimum abrasion resistance to fast moving sand, dirt, water, and harsh chemicals to 1,000°C, sapphire is second only to diamond in terms of hardness (Moh 9) and can transmit from the UV to IR.

Featuring up to 85% transmission uncoated and <.25% reflection per surface with A/R coatings, Meller Sapphire Windows can be round, rectangular, and square, and have surface finishes to 60-40 scratch-dig. The domes feature surface accuracy to <1 fringe @633nm and finishes to 20-10 scratch-dig per MIL-PRF-13830. All optics can include special edge treatments, precise hole drilling, and A/R coatings to customer specification.
