Gas Detector Calibrator works in harsh, remote locations.

May 7, 2009 - Automatic Remote Gas Calibrator (ARGC) facilitates maintenance of S4000CH combustible gas detector by allowing calibration gas to be applied to catalytic bead sensor from easily accessible locations. Comprised of remote gas calibrator and solenoid valve, AGRC requires no electrical wiring or connectors and can calibrate gases at wind velocities up to 50 mph and temperatures to 75°C. Operation may be either manual or electronic via HART/Modbus or magnet menu.

Gas Detector Calibration in Remote Locations is Now Easier than Ever Before

Ideal for Oil Rigs, Gas Compressor Stations, Chemical Processing Plants, Electric Power Utilities, Wastewater Treatment Facilities & More

LAKE FOREST, CA-April 22, 2009--Calibrating the Model S4000CH Combustible Gas Detector with a remotely-installed sensor is now easier than ever with the new Automatic Remote Gas Calibrator (ARGC) from General Monitors. The ARGC addresses the need for more convenient and expedient maintenance routines by allowing calibration gas to be applied to the catalytic bead sensor from easily accessible locations.

The ARGC consists of a Remote Gas Calibrator (RGC) and a solenoid valve. The ARGC blocks ambient air and re-directs the calibration gas to the catalytic bead sensor for calibration or testing sensor accuracy. The instrument can calibrate gases at wind velocities as high as 50 mph and maximum temperatures of 75°C. After connecting the ARGC to any S4000CH Detector, the calibrator can be operated manually or electronically via HART or Modbus, or the magnet menu.

A number of lighter-than-air combustible gases are common hazards that collect in ceilings, turbines, ducts and other spaces. Because these gases typically accumulate above work areas and equipment, the gas detectors must be placed in elevated locations where the gas will rise and come into contact with their sensors. Performing routine maintenance on combustible gas detectors in these areas is often difficult, requiring scaffolding, ladders, or lifts to bring the technicians to the sensors. If the detector is in a confined space - in a tank or pit, for example - a special permit may be needed to access the device. Invariably, maintenance is hardly routine in these cases and often requires extra precautions and technician time.

The ARGC is suitable for a wide range of applications, including drilling rigs, compressor stations, refineries, aircraft hangars and warehouses. It is easy to install and use, requiring no electrical wiring or connectors. For fully automatic operation from a control room, the two bidirectional protocols (HART and Modbus) are utilized.

The S4000CH is a hydrocarbon gas detector suitable for use in SIL 3 applications and approved by FM, CSA, ATEX, GOST and has CE Marking. It features a three-digit display and an explosion-proof housing, which allows all data to be processed locally at the sensor site. The S4000CH is also available with an optional relay configuration that is appropriate for SIL 2 processes. The S4000CH features one-person calibration for ease of maintenance.

Whether used to perform remote calibration by hand or automatically, the ARGC and the S4000CH are a powerful combination. Together they allow operators to calibrate sensors from the ground or in the convenience of a control room, reducing maintenance costs. Additionally, they reduce the need for planned shutdowns and special work permits. Routine maintenance truly becomes routine. Convenience promotes regulatory compliance, better record keeping with S4000CH tools like event logging, and control over an array of combustible gas detectors.
