BASF Introduces "Whiter White" Pigment

Synthetic mica flakes give Glacier(TM) Frost White extraordinary luster, brilliance

FLORHAM PARK, NJ, April 3, 2009 -- BASF is launching Glacier(TM) Frost, a "whiter white" pigment developed with a new generation of titanium dioxide-coated synthetic mica flakes.

Glacier Frost White - designed to help coatings, plastics and printing inks formulators achieve extraordinary luster and brilliance in a broad range of applications from paints to consumer electronics and cosmetic and personal care packaging - was officially introduced at the European Coatings Show in Nuremberg, Germany, on March 31. It is now commercially available in North America.

With a bluish reflection color, Glacier Frost White creates white to black shades without the yellowish appearance of traditional synthetic mica pearlescent pigments. In addition to a whiter appearance, the new pearl pigment provides reflections of pure white brilliance.

"Glacier Frost White expands BASF's innovative portfolio of pigments, which already provides a broad range of depth, gloss, sparkle and multicolor effects, by meeting a critical need in the clean white and vibrant color space," said Thierry Chevrier, Director, Coating & Plastic Chemicals, for BASF in North America.

"BASF's effect materials are designed to help our customers to be more successful. These pigments make our customers' products better by stimulating consumer senses, enabling sustainable design flexibility, and allowing our customers to respond to emerging industry trends," he added.

Synthetic mica is absolutely transparent, and is free of natural impurities, such as iron oxides. Because of this, it offers better luster and brightness than traditional pigments and outstanding sparkle effects in all shade areas.
