Additives/Coating protect wood from effects of UV radiation.

April 17, 2009 - Used to stabilize primary lignin in wood, SunCare® Lignin Protection includes 3 products designed to protect against degradation and yellowing caused by UV radiation. SunCare Concentrate and SunCare UV Concentrate serve as additives in primer and stain applications, while SunCare 800 is supplied as ready-to-use, formulated primer for untreated wood. All three products are based on UV-absorber plus stereochemically hindered amine chemistry and do not contribute odor to formulation.

ISP Introduces SunCare® Lignin Protection Products for Wood Coatings

New Technology Provides the 'First Line of Defense' in Protecting Wood from UV Radiation and More

NURNBERG, Germany, April 1, 2009 -- At this year's European Coatings Show (ECS), ISP introduced a new line of coatings ingredients designed to protect wood from degradation and yellowing caused by UV radiation. Called SunCare(R) Lignin Protection, the new line functions by stabilizing the primary lignin in the wood itself, representing a "first line of defense" against a range of factors that cause wood degradation. At ECS, ISP introduced three new products - SunCare(R) Concentrate, SunCare(R) UV Concentrate and SunCare(R) 800. The first two products serve as additives in primer and stain applications. The third product, SunCare 800(R), is a ready-to-use formulated primer for untreated wood. Studies by ISP have shown that when SunCare(R) Lignin Protection technology is used as a primer or as an additive, it can significantly increase the level of protection for wood coatings and delay yellowing, two important benefits that enable warrantable "long-lasting" performance claims on industrial and consumer wood products.

According to Scott Edris, Senior Director of Global Marketing, Performance & Agricultural Chemicals, SunCare(R) Lignin Protection technology is a fundamentally different approach to wood protection that can work by itself or synergistically with other wood protection technologies. "By stabilizing the primary lignin, SunCare(R) products act as an excellent preventive measure against UV radiation and yellowing," he said. "Lignin stabilization makes wood less vulnerable to water and fungal degradation as well as insect damage. We see SunCare(R) Lignin protection additives as important components of premium wood protection products, working synergistically with other wood protection technologies, for end-use products that will deliver better performance that lasts significantly longer than what is on the market today. All things being equal, we feel that coatings consumers will opt for a coating that performs longer and delays the need for re-application," he added.

Three New Products

The new SunCare(R) Lignin Protection line includes three products at the outset. All three products are based on a UV-absorber plus stereochemically hindered amine chemistry.

They do not contribute odor to a formulation. The additive products are soluble in water. SunCare(R) Concentrate is a lignin protection and stabilization additive for interior and exterior waterborne primers and stains. SunCare(R) UV Concentrate offers similar functionality that can be used with UV-cured and oxidative drying top coats. SunCare(R) 800 is a ready-to-use primer for untreated wood. It is easily applied by dipping, spraying or other application methods and penetrates deeply into the wood. It should be applied directly, avoiding dilution in water or solvents. Wood treated with SunCare(R) 800 should also be treated with a stain to protect the substrate from exposure to moisture.
