NTT Electronics Releases World's First Intergrated Receiver Decoder Combining AVC/H.264 4:2:2 HDTV Decoder and DVB-S2 Demodulator

TOKYO, March 31 / -- NTT Electronics Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward (hereafter, NTT Electronics), today announced the global release of HVD6100. The HVD6100 is NTT Electronics' professional 4:2:2 integrated receiver decoder (IRD) for broadcast contribution and distribution which is the ideal solution for satellite, broadcast, cable and telco operators.

HVD6100 is the world's first professional IRD that combines decoder functionality with support for AVC/H.264 HDTV, 4:2:2 chroma with a DVB-S2(*1) demodulator. The decoder function supports multi-format (AVC/H.264 and MPEG-2, 4:2:2/4:2:0 chroma and HDTV/SDTV) and comes equipped with a variety of features such as HDTV/SDTV resolution conversion. The demodulator function supports DVB-S2, DVB-DSNG(*2) and DVB-S(*3) formats for high-performance satellite transmissions. For its demodulation method, it supports 16APSK (*4) and 32APSK (*5) as well as QPSK (*6) and 8PSK (*7), which are more efficient transmission formats that haven't been supported in IRDs before. Furthermore, the HVD6100 not only supports constant coding and modulation (CCM) but also supports variable coding and modulation (VCM) and by Q4 of this year will support adaptive coding and modulation (ACM).

The HVD6100 has IP and ASI inputs, so it can be used for high-quality HDTV/SDTV video and audio transmission applications such as broadcast contribution and distribution, in addition to non-broadcast video applications. The use of NTT Electronics' HVE9100 AVC/H.264 HDTV/SDTV encoder with 4:2:2 chroma enables for high-quality video transmission with low latency.

Varying formats such as HDTV/SDTV, AVC/H.264 and MPEG-2 are currently being used to transmit video in broadcast contribution and distribution. During this transition period, in which current and next-generation formats co-exist, the professional IRD market has not had a product that combines an AVC/H.264 decoder with support for HDTV 4:2:2 chroma and a DVB-S2 demodulator that enables for high-efficiency satellite transmission. "As a company that has received high praise for the HVD9100 decoder with AVC/H.264 HDTV/SDTV support, we have noticed that there has been increasing demand that requires the release of a more advanced IRD into the market," said Hisashi Kasahara, General Manager of the Multimedia Systems Division at NTT Electronics. "To respond to this need, NTT Electronics has announced HVD6100, the world's first professional IRD that combines an AVC/H.264 HDTV decoder with 4:2:2 chroma together with a DVB-S2 demodulator." With the release of this product, the external modulator previously required for high-quality video transmission applications such as satellite news gathering (SNG) and video distribution is no longer required, thus contributing to simplification of operations and reduced costs.

Terminology

*1: DVB-S2

-- 2005 standard that succeed DVB-S and DVB-DSNG.

-- Is structured as a toolkit to allow the implementation of the following satellite applications: TV and sound broadcasting, interactivity and professional services, such as TV contribution and digital satellite news gathering.

-- Its transmission capacity has increased approximately 30% compared to DVB-S.

*2: DVB-DSNG

-- 1999 standard which added 8PSK and 16QAM to DVB-S. Uses backward compatibility of DVB-S for backhauls and electronic news gathering.

*3: DVB-S

-- Abbreviation for Digital Video Broadcasting-Satellite.

-- Is the original Digital Video Broadcasting forward error coding and modulation standard for satellite television.

*4: QPSK

-- Abbreviation for Quaternary Phase Shift Keying.

-- QPSK is a phase modulation algorithm which uses four phases.

*5: 8PSK

-- Abbreviation for 8-ary Phase Shift Keying.

-- 8PSK is a phase modulation algorithm which is less tolerant of link degradation than QPSK, but provides more data capacity.

*6: 16APSK

-- Abbreviation for 16-ary Amplitude and Phase Shift Keying.

-- 16APSK is a digital modulation scheme that conveys data by changing, or modulating, both the amplitude and the phase of a reference signal.

-- The DVB-S2 specification permits the use of 16APSK and 32APSK modes.

*7: 32APSK

-- Abbreviation for 32-ary Amplitude and Phase Shift Keying.

-- A digital modulation scheme that conveys data by changing, or modulating, both the amplitude and the phase of a reference signal. The DVB-S2 specification permits the use of 16APSK and 32APSK modes.
