Hollow Shaft Encoder features large-bore construction.
April 2, 2009 -
Accommodating motor shafts up to 2 7/8 in. dia, NorthStar HS60 suits mill-duty motor applications. Unit features all stainless steel hub for corrosion resistance, which rides on oversized sealed bearings. Dual-split clamping collar provides positive shaft engagement for high acceleration or reversing applications. Utilizing magneto-resistive sensor and electronics, encoder delivers full differential line driver outputs and can drive signal hundreds of feet without repeater or amplifier.
Dynapar Introduces Large Bore Hollow Shaft Encoder
Dynapar announces the introduction of the NorthStar HS60 large bore hollow-shaft encoder. The new encoder features large-bore construction capable of accommodating motor shafts up to 2-7/8" in diameter, ideal for mill-duty motor applications. The encoder also features improved sealing and proven magneto-resistive sensing technology for tough environmental conditions.
Perfect for Vector-Duty Motors
NorthStar's large bore hollow-shaft design of the HS60 makes it ideal for use on TEFC (Totally Enclosed, Fan Cooled) vector-duty motors, or large motors without a C-face provision for accessory mounting. Unlike competitive encoders with carbon-steel hub shafts, the HS60 features an all-stainless steel hub for corrosion resistance, which rides on oversized sealed bearings spaced farther apart for greater load-bearing capability and long life. A dual-split clamping collar is utilized instead of setscrews, which provides a more positive shaft engagement for high acceleration or reversing applications. The encoder body is hard-anodized aluminum, and in conjunction with the included swivel rod tether provides electrical isolation against motor shaft currents.
Improved Sealing for Tough Environments
Multi-stage sealing utilizing O-rings, sealed bearings, and choice of either labyrinth-type or v-ring shaft seals protects the encoder in wash-down applications. In addition, both front and rear shaft seals are shielded by a factory-installed cover, designed to protect against debris and damage. Another welcome feature is that the assembly fasteners don't penetrate the sensing cavity, eliminating a secondary ingress point. As with all NorthStar magneto-resistive encoders, the HS60 features fully sealed & encapsulated electronics for the ultimate in environmental protection. Even in the event of seal failure due to damage or accelerated wear, the magneto-resistive sensor is unaffected by moisture, unlike traditional optical encoders.
Reliable Sensor and Electronics
The HS60 uses NorthStar's proven magneto-resistive sensor and electronics. The encoder features full differential line driver outputs (A, B, and Index channels) and is capable of driving the signal hundreds of feet reliably without using a repeater or amplifier. Dual isolated outputs are also available for redundancy or driving multiple devices off the same motor shaft from a single encoder. A solder-less latching connector with ½" NPT fitting for conduit entry applications is standard, as is the choice of a military-style connector or cable exit.
Price and Availability
The NorthStar HS60 is made in the U.S.A. and built to order. The encoder is immediately available and list pricing starts at $1250. For OEM applications and volume pricing, contact a Dynapar representative at 800-873-8731.
