Sartomer Introduces SMAŽ2021 Copolymer for Improved Water and Heat Resistance

EXTON, Pa., March 11, 2009 - Global specialty chemicals manufacturer Sartomer Company introduces SMAŽ2021 copolymer - a styrene maleic anhydride copolymer that offers improved heat resistance without compromising water resistance in polymer modification, leather re-tanning, graphic arts, coatings and overprint varnish applications.

SMA2021 copolymer is approved for use in the following FDA applications:

175.105 Adhesives - provided that the adhesives are separated from food by a functional barrier or used under conditions in which minimal migration of the adhesive to food is expected to occur.

176.170 Components of paper and paperboard in contact with aqueous and fatty foods - at up to 15 percent of the coating solids in one mil thick overprint varnishes applied to cardboard boxes for produce and paper plates, provided that the SMA copolymer does not constitute more than two percent by weight of the substrate and the finished food-contact surface meets the extractive limitations in Section 176.170(c).

176.180 Components of paper and paperboard in contact with dry food - at up to 15 percent of the coating solids in one mil thick overprint varnishes applied to paper and paperboard packaging for dry food.

SMA2021 copolymer is available in flake, powder and ammonia solution form.
