Testing Instrument determines IV of moisture-sensitive PET.

February 24, 2009 - Using solvent-free process, Davenport PETPlus Intrinsic Viscosity Measurement Instrument enables polymers to be tested at all stages of process to eliminate scrap. MPU-controlled, stand-alone system can complete Intrinsic Viscosity (IV) tests in less than 20 min, stores up to 600 test results, and provides temperature control to +0.1°C. Supplied with integral nitrogen regulation valve, unit requires only power and pressurized nitrogen supply for operation.

Plastics Testing Instrument Range Grows

On show for the first time in Russia at INTERPLASTICA 2009, the Davenport PETPlus Intrinsic Viscosity Measurement Instrument is the latest addition to Lloyd Instruments' comprehensive range of instruments for testing plastics, polymers and rubber throughout the product life cycle, from raw material to finished product. This new instrument offers significant cost, environmental and testing benefits for determining the Intrinsic Viscosity of moisture-sensitive PET, avoiding the environmental hazard of handling and disposal of toxic solvents. Supplied with an integral nitrogen regulation valve, the PETPlus requires only power and a pressurised nitrogen supply for operation.

Polymers can be tested at virtually all stages of the process: incoming resin, powder, dry granules, molten polymer, pre-forms, bottles, films and even re-ground material to eliminate scrap. Tests can be completed in less than 20 minutes. Rapid testing at the different stages can be carried out using ancillary equipment for controlled sample collection and preparation. The instrument's compact construction occupies significantly less bench space than earlier models and makes it easier and quicker to load samples.

The microprocessor controlled stand-alone system provides high accuracy measurements, temperature control to + 0.1°C and storage of up to 600 test results. A backlit LCD displays instructions for the test in a variety of languages as well as the results. An RS-232 interface allows connection to a computer for fully automated software control and downloading of results.

The PETPlus Intrinsic Viscosity Measurement Instrument uses a unique solvent-free method for routine measurement of the intrinsic viscosity (IV) of PET. Molten PET is extruded through a calibrated die by nitrogen gas under pressure and the LVDT probe movement against time is recorded and displayed. The system measures the optimum flow rate and calculates intrinsic viscosity using a patented method originally developed by ICI. The procedure used ensures that reliable, accurate and repeatable results are easily obtained and checked against standard polymers.

Also on show from the Davenport range of >melt flow indexers, friction testers, density columns and falling dart impact testers is the MFI-10 Melt Flow Indexer. On display from the extensive range of Lloyd Instruments' materials testing equipment is the versatile "2 in 1" FTPlus friction tester and the twin column 10 kN LR10KPlus, equipped with an EX800Plus long travel extensometer and an STGA High Resolution Strain Gauge Extensometer.
