Pioneering Cooling Technology

New Rittal air-air heat exchanger for railway technology

Rittal is unveiling at InnoTrans a new on-board energy-efficient air-air heat exchanger. The company is the only manufacturer in the world to mass-produce equipment such as this. The innovative wall-mounted units fulfill all the requirements of railway technology with respect to design (EN 50155), surface quality (DB TL 918340), fire protection (EN 45545) and resistance to shocks and vibration (EN 61373).

Herborn, 30 October 2008 - The new air-air heat ex-changer from Rittal is used as wall-mounted units to cool down enclosures and housings specifically in mobile railway technology in suburban trains, locomotives and high-speed trains. The innovation is designed as on-board equipment in accordance with EN 50 155 (Standardised testing procedures for electronic equipment used on rolling stock) and is tested in terms of its resistance to shocks and vibrations in accordance with EN 61373 (Shock and vibration tests for railway equipment). In this way, a reliable connection system is guaranteed with the result that no screws become loose even with the high dynamic stresses in daily rail transport.

In addition, the surfaces painted in RAL 7035 S fulfil the product requirements of Deutsche Bahn with respect to the coating of surfaces inside railway vehicles. The new heat exchangers are also prepared for future fire protection in accordance with EN 45545 (Fire protection stipula-tions for rail transport). Non-halogen connection cables prevent harmful smoke emissions in the event of a fire.

The air-air heat exchangers from Rittal are available as complete ready-for-connection units in the four output classes 27, 47, 66 and 98 W/K as well in the rated operating voltages 24 V (DC) and 110 V (DC). There are three mounting options available: External mounting, internal mounting, and partial internal mounting via a special mounting frame.

The requirement for using air/air heat exchangers is that the ambient temperature must be below the required en-closure internal temperature. Dust and aggressive ambient air cannot penetrate the enclosure due to two air circuits separated from one another - each of which is provided with separately controlled external and internal fans. Heavy dust contamination of the external circuit can be reduced by using optional metal filters.

Competence in a variety of fields
As a leading global solution provider for housing and en-closure technology, system climate control and IT solutions, Rittal provides appropriate solutions for all areas of railway technology. From vandal-proof outdoor enclosures to specified enclosure systems, through to monitoring in the control room. Selected modules from our comprehen-sive product range are combined to form individual solutions. To this end, we provide around the world suitable equipment for system configuration, power distribution, electronic modules, climate control, security monitoring and fuel cell systems for power supply.
