Ultrasonic Sensor can detect clear labels on clear web.

December 2, 2008 - Leveraging thru-beam technology, XUV Fork Ultrasonic Sensor can detect labels of any material, size, color, or translucency and allows for manual adjustments on-the-fly. Keys on sensor allow for real-time modifications based on material thickness, which can range from 0.001-0.003 in. Rated to IP65, sensor also can be locked to avoid unnecessary adjustments and will retain its settings even if it is powered down and turned back on. Operating range is 41 to 131°F.

Schneider Electric XUV Fork Ultrasonic Sensor Offers Efficiency, Reduced Cost of Ownership

Palatine, Ill. (USA), November 11, 2008 - Schneider Electric, the global leader in energy management, is breaking ground with the new XUV Fork Ultrasonic Sensor. Built for efficiency and equipment cost reduction, the ultrasonic sensor uses thru-beam technology to detect labels of any material, size, color or translucency.

"Schneider Electric's Fork Ultrasonic XUV Sensor is the only ultrasonic sensor on the market able to detect clear labels on a clear web and reduce the cost of ownership by allowing for manual adjustments on the fly," said Tony Bane, sensor product manager, Schneider Electric Sensor Competency Center. "The adjustments are able to be made, and locked, by the facility's engineering staff."

The thru-beam technology allows Schneider Electric's ultrasonic sensor to send sound through an object and determine the thickness by how much sound is returned. The +/- keys on the sensor allow for real-time modifications based on the thickness of the material being sensed. The sensor also can be locked to avoid unnecessary adjustments and will retain its settings even if the sensor is powered down and turned back on; saving the facility irreplaceable time and money.

"While most sensors need to be sent to the manufacturer for adjustments and modifications, the ultrasonic sensor allows the engineering staff to make the needed adjustments themselves," Bane said.

The ultrasonic sensor is suitable for a variety of applications, including label, ply, double-sheet, splice and wrinkle/seam detection. It is capable of detecting labels between thicknesses of 0.03 mm (0.001") and 0.08 mm (0/003"). The ultrasonic sensor is IP65 rated and operates in the temperature range of 5°C to 55°C (41°F to 131°F).
