Internal Heat Exchanger targets automotive applications.

December 1, 2008 - Using coaxial tube design integrated in refrigerant circuit, IHX replaces part of suction and liquid refrigerant lines in traditional R134a system and exchanges energy in counter-flow arrangement. Intelligent solution uses unique design for adapter blocks, eliminating need to machine tube ends. Heat exchanger supports European Commission's plans for more efficient mobile air conditioning systems to reduce real-world fuel consumption and lower CO2 exhaust emissions.

Visteon to Launch Innovative Internal Heat Exchanger That Boosts Cooling Capacity and Efficiency of Automotive Air Conditioning Systems

VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich., Nov. 13, 2008 /- Visteon Corporation (NYSE:VC) has developed an internal heat exchanger (IHX) that increases cooling power in a vehicle up to 14 percent. It uses an innovative coaxial tube design integrated in the refrigerant circuit for enhanced automotive air conditioning system performance and efficiency.

The new internal heat exchanger, which replaces a part of the suction and liquid refrigerant lines in a traditional R134a system, exchanges energy in a counter-flow arrangement. When combined with tuning of the expansion device settings, the IHX increases system cooling performance up to 14 percent and improve operating efficiency up to 12 percent -- depending on the base system and thermal expansion valve settings. Applied to the new near drop-in refrigerant R1234yf, the technology delivers similar performance improvements. Visteon will launch its first commercial applications during the first quarter of 2009.

As the automotive industry strives to increase cooling power and improve energy efficiency, Visteon's IHX supports the European Commission's plans for more efficient mobile air conditioning systems in order to reduce real-world fuel consumption and lower CO2 exhaust emissions.

Visteon's coaxial IHX features a unique design that allows compact dimensions and excellent packaging flexibility while maintaining a low pressure drop. This intelligent solution also uses a unique design for adapter blocks, eliminating the need to machine the tube ends, resulting in superior internal cleanliness and a simplified manufacturing process.

"Visteon has applied its proven expertise in fluid transport solutions to optimize the component performance of the IHX, balancing a compact package with low pressure drop and high heat rejection," said Joy Greenway, president of Visteon's climate control product group. "As with Visteon's R744 Accumulator with internal heat exchanger (AccuIHX), we are able to utilize our unique skills in fluid transport, heat exchangers and systems integration to assist vehicle manufacturers in achieving optimal air conditioning system performance, regardless of their refrigerant selection."

Visteon Corporation is a leading global automotive supplier that designs, engineers and manufactures innovative climate, interior, electronic and lighting products for vehicle manufacturers, and also provides a range of products and services to aftermarket customers. With corporate offices in Van Buren Township, Mich. (U.S.); Shanghai, China; and Kerpen, Germany; the company has facilities in 27 countries and employs approximately 35,500 people.
