Triac Photocouplers include built-in noise immunity.

November 25, 2008 - Housed in 6-pin DIP packages, Models TLP3782 and TLP3783 provide peak off-stage output voltage of 800 V and isolation voltage up to 5,000 Vrms. Each consists of GaAs IR emitting diode and zero crossing turn-on photo-triac. Units feature trigger LED current of 10 and 5 mA, respectively, input forward current of 30 mA, and on-state current of 0.1 Arms. Zero crossing devices provide optical isolation between logic and AC current to minimize EMI and provide protection from current surges.

Toshiba Announces 800v Zero-Cross Triac Photocouplers for Home Appliances, Office Equipment and Solid State Relays

High Voltage Zero Crossing Triac Couplers with High Isolation Voltage and High Noise Immunity Expand Product Lineup

Irvine, Calif., Nov. 12, 2008 - Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, has expanded its triac photocoupler line with two new zero-crossing, triac-output photocouplers with built-in noise immunity and peak off-state output voltage of 800 volt (V), housed in 6-pin DIP packages. The triac-outputs are used to control current in both the forward and reverse direction. Developed by Toshiba Corp., the devices feature high isolation voltage up to 5000 Vrms (min.). Targeted applications include office equipment, home appliances, solid-state relays and triac drivers.

The two zero-crossing devices, TLP3782 and TLP3783, provide optical isolation between logic and the AC current to optimize performance, improve reliability, reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and provide circuit protection from current surges. Each of the triac photocouplers consists of a gallium arsenide (GaAs) infrared emitting diode and a zero crossing turn-on photo-triac. The two devices meet UL and reinforced insulation class VDE international safety standards1.

The TLP3782 and TLP3783 provide impulse noise immunity (VN) of 1500V (typ.) for applications that may have higher external noise. The devices feature trigger LED current (IFT) of 10mA and 5mA, respectively, input forward current of 30mA, and on-state current (IT) of 0.1 Arms.

"These triac couplers expand Toshiba's lineup of 800V zero-crossing devices with two devices that include impulse noise immunity, provide lower input current and choice of trigger current levels," said Talayeh Saderi, business development engineer, Optoelectronics Devices, for TAEC.

Pricing and Availability

Samples of the TLP3782 and TLP3783 triac photocouplers are available now, with prices in sample quantities of $0.50 and $0.55, respectively.

Toshiba's Discrete Products

Since 1986, Toshiba Corp. has ranked as the top discrete supplier on a worldwide basis, based on annual revenue from international shipments of total discrete products. According to the most recent annual report from market research firm Gartner Dataquest (San Jose, CA), Toshiba remained the top discrete semiconductor supplier. (Source: "2007 Worldwide Semiconductor Market Share Report," Gartner, released April 2008). More specifically, Toshiba is a leading supplier in a number of discrete product categories, including power transistors, rectifiers and thyristors, LMOS logic, CMOS logic, photocouplers, TOSLINKs, LEDs, and small signal diodes and transistors. The company's discrete devices are designed to meet the growing demand for high-performance and lower voltages in today's wireless telecommunications and consumer electronics applications, while emphasizing its strength in the automotive and industrial markets.
