Comarco Introduces High Performance Advanced Wireless Services Radio Frequency Scanner

- Comarco's newest scanner solution supports the emerging Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum frequencies, increases performance and scanning speed for radio frequency (RF) analysis -

LAKE FOREST, Calif., Nov. 10 -- Comarco, Inc. (NASDAQ:CMRO), an industry-leading supplier of wireless test systems for field applications and network performance optimization, today announced the availability of its Advance Wireless Services (AWS) scanning receiver solution which supports simultaneous measurements of multiple technologies in the current AWS band (2110-2155 MHz), and future AWS-3 band (2155-2170 MHz), as well as in the existing 850Mhz and 1900Mhz bands. The new scanner design now spans all U.S. cellular frequencies while simultaneously increasing the baseband decoding rate for high resolution scans in all supported bands. An enhancement of Comarco's existing leading RF scanner design, this third generation solution scanner builds on Comarco's existing and proven technology while expanding its versatility and improving its performance.

"This addition of AWS support extends the capability of our leading multi-technology scanning receiver family to include AWS frequency band support where service is now being deployed by major carriers," said Mark Chapman, senior vice president and general manager for Comarco Wireless Test Solutions. "In addition we have implemented several unique algorithmic improvements resulting in significantly enhanced Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA) and Common Pilot Channel (CPICH) scan rates in all bands. We continue to add capabilities across our entire scanner range and believe this further demonstrates our commitment to lead the market for multi technology scanning solutions."

About the Advance Wireless Services (AWS) Scanning Receiver Solution

Supporting precise measurements of the downlink signal strength in 850 MHz, 1900 MHz, and 2100 MHz AWS bands, the scanner is offered in three forms: as a standalone scanner product (i.e. Prizm), as an upgrade to Comarco's popular Quality of Service (QoS) wireless network benchmarking and optimization products (i.e. Symphony Multi and Opti), and as an OEM version for integration with third party test and monitoring equipment.

The scanner module is fully programmable and supports simultaneous scanning of multiple technologies (including CDMA-1x EVDO, GSM/GPRS, EDGE, W-CDMA, and HSDPA). It also provides both RSSI and high performance technology specific baseband decoding. Implementing advanced scanning algorithms, the AWS scanner now supports a fast scan feature for W-CDMA, achieving a top 16 CPICH scan rate of 10 ms. As with previous designs, W-CDMA mode delivers scrambling code, Ec/No measurements for CPICH, PSC, SSC and BCH, Delay, and Cell ID. Likewise, the GSM rapid scan rate of up to 728 channels per second coupled with the high precision measurements offer unparalleled analysis capabilities for GSM operators, simplifying interference detection and neighbor list optimization. This GSM mode delivers BSIC, C/I, BCCH indication, EDGE indication, Cell ID, All BCCH as well as Top BCCH scan.

As with previous designs, CDMA mode delivers Ec/Io, Ec/Ep, PN offset, delay, spread, individual Walsh code measurement, technology indication (1X, EVDO), All PN scan as well as an automated Top PN scan. The unit's rapid CDMA scan rate of 33.3ms/512 PNs coupled with high precision measurements offers unparalleled analysis capabilities for CDMA operators, simplifying pilot pollution detection and neighbor list optimization as well as identifying "island cell' conditions and other timing related and multi-path interference induced issues. In addition, its high RSSI scan rate of 300ch/sec of the 1.2288 Mhz (Io) channel, makes the scanner is ideal for coverage determination and interference analysis.

Its high performance RF front end offers superior out of band signal rejection and high frequency stability and its robust design ensure accurate measurements even in the presence of strong interfering signals. This makes it ideal for operation where absolute RF accuracy of all signals is required such as RF propagation validation, automated frequency planning data collection and in network optimization. Its high IP3 also provides operational resilience in applications where close proximity to other transmitting antennas can induce intermodulation interference such as in Drive Test and competitive Benchmarking programs. The scanner is intended for use by carriers deploying cellular voice and data services in the AWS frequency block and in applications include spectrum clearing, initial deployment and network service coverage determination. It also offers cellular operators the ability to add extended service coverage monitoring to their existing QoS benchmarking programs.

Built to exacting standards, the Comarco scanning receivers are designed to operate reliably in real world field conditions and under harsh operating environments, ensuring integrity of data collection and maximizing engineering productivity.

About Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) Spectrum

The wireless industry has seen explosive growth in the demand for both voice and data services over the past several years. The number of mobile telephone subscribers, as well as usage rates, has grown considerably, and carriers have been upgrading their networks with advanced technologies in order to deploy both high-quality voice services and innovative data services.

In order to keep pace with this growth and provide additional spectrum for providers, the Federal Communications Commission has drafted rules, auctioned, and licensed additional spectrum, labeled AWS, that can be used to offer a variety of wireless services, including Third Generation ("3G") mobile broadband and advanced wireless services in the U.S. The AWS band uses microwave frequencies in two segments: from 1710 to 1755 MHz, and from 2110 to 2155 MHz. The service is intended to be used by mobile devices such as wireless phones for mobile data, video and messaging services.
