Fujitsu Microelectronics Introduces Versatile, Feature-Rich MB88F322 Graphics Display Controller at Convergence 2008, Extending Global Leadership in Graphics Technology

Latest Member of GDC Family Provides a Low-cost, Solution for a Variety of Hybrid Cluster Configurations

DETROIT, Oct. 21 / / - Convergence 2008 -- Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA), the industry leader in advanced graphics display control technology, today introduced the latest member of its proven GDC family, the MB88F322, designed to deliver best-in-class graphics performance along with sophisticated graphics in an efficient, compact two-chip solution.

This versatile, feature-rich device has been designed for today's most popular display-based automotive applications including instrument clusters, heads-up displays, central information displays, and rear-seat entertainment systems. Functioning as a sprite engine optimized to process and animate sprites and bitmaps in a variety of sizes and color depths, the new graphics display controller incorporates advanced on-board features that significantly reduce bill-of-materials cost, form factor and total system power consumption.

The MB88F322 does not incorporate a traditional 2D/3D rendering engine, enabling it to operate at frequencies of just 80MHz with significantly reduced power consumption. The sprite engine also does not require the expensive frame buffer memory typically needed for graphics rendering units. Instead the GDC uses a simpler, less-expensive, line-buffering technique. As a result, the device requires minimal on-board memory, which is more than enough to support the bit maps and sprites typical in automotive applications. For splash screens and other more complex content, the MB88F322 features run-time data compression for expansion of run-length encoded data.

Support for the APIX Interface

The MB88F322 also supports the Automotive Pixel Link (APIX) interface, which enables multiple remote display subsystems to be managed by one controller. APIX is a serial gigabit interface from Inova Semiconductors. This new standard for the transmission of image and peripheral data will meet the requirements of the latest display applications in vehicles, leading to higher performance and lower implementation costs. Fujitsu is the first silicon vendor to integrate this new video interface into a portfolio of microcontrollers and graphics controllers.

The MB88F322 couples the APIX interface with other interfaces to control LEDs, display backlights, stepper motors to control mechanical gauges, an enhanced sound generator and on-board memory. Combined with a low-cost MCU, the MB88322 provides a two-chip solution for a variety of low-cost cluster configurations.

An advanced image-processing system provides 1-, 2-, 4-, and 8-bit indirect color palettes, along with 14-bit and 16-bit direct color modes for finer gradient coloring. A 4/8 bit alpha-plane and dithering-and-gamma unit ensures high image quality. The display controller supports a variety of display sizes with resolutions up to 800 x 600 and color depths of 8-, 16- and 24-bits. An integrated programmable timing control unit (TCON) enables the device to directly interface with a bare display panel, significantly reducing overall system cost.

An industry common 5-volt device, the MB88F322 includes six on-chip stepper motor controllers (SMC), making it ideal for application in mixed clusters that feature both TFT and traditional mechanical gauges.

The MB88F322 also integrates on-chip pulse width modulators (PWM), ADCs, I2C, UARTs, and a sound generator, allowing control of all the peripheral functions (including backlight circuits, LEDs, sensors and on-board communication) in a display subsystem.

The combination of advanced functionality and the elimination of frame-buffer memory means new designs can be deployed on low-cost, two-layer boards with a minimum of external components.

"Our experience and expertise in graphics display control technology has enabled Fujitsu to develop a highly efficient, cost-effective generation of graphics display controllers that sets a new performance standard for this important class of controllers," said Dan Landeck, senior manager of Automotive Solutions for the Automotive Business Group of Fujitsu Microelectronics America. "The MB88F322 supports the APIX interface and eliminates unnecessary memory while incorporating a comprehensive set of functions that take the development of vehicle information and entertainment systems to a new level of low power and high performance."

Pricing and Availability

Packaged in a low-cost 208-pin Quad-flat package (QFP), the MB88F322 is available now. Pricing is available upon request.
