Newest I/O Expander Devices From Toshiba Increase Functionality and Reliability in Mobile Handset Designs
TC35893XBG and TC35894XBG Devices Address Peripheral, Mechanical and Power Issues in High-End Handsets and Portable CE Devices
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 21 /-- Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today announced its TC35893XBG and TC35894XBG flexible I/O expander devices -- the company's newest additions to its mobile peripheral device product portfolio. The TC35893XBG and TC35894XBG easily allow the addition of I/O peripheral ports so keypads, LEDs, and switches can interface seamlessly within a mobile handset or other portable consumer electronics device. Additionally, the TC35893XBG and TC35894XBG improve power efficiency in handheld devices and address the mechanical and electrical design challenges associated with moveable parts in advanced-feature mobile handsets.
With today's mobile handsets offering everything from Internet access and text messaging to multimedia storage and playback, 3D gaming, mobile TV and video capture, additional I/O ports are required to accommodate the peripherals needed to support these applications. Moreover, to facilitate easier keyboard operation, slide-out and clam-shell configurations have become quite popular; but these types of handheld implementations present challenges because heavy wiring through the hinges and sliders can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) and mechanical stress, which can result in product failure. The TC35893XBG and TC35894XBG I/O expanders solve these problems by dramatically reducing the wired connections in moveable handheld designs while still providing full flexibility to accommodate various keypad layouts from 2x2 to 8x12 with up to 96 keys (88 keys for TC35893XBG) and eight special function keys. Direct key support is available on the TC35894XBG device.
According to Andrew Burt, vice president of the Imaging and Communications Marketing Group in the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC, "Toshiba continues to stay abreast of issues in handheld designs and will quickly develop and release solutions for mobile peripheral devices that interface between the baseband and/or application processors to I/O devices such as cameras, displays, keypads and touch panels. The TC35893XBG and TC35894XBG expand Toshiba's previous I/O expander products by adding support for both direct CMOS clock and internal RC-generated clock input and adding a more flexible debounce period to further strengthen Toshiba's Mobile Strategic Initiative to facilitate feature-rich cell phones, smart phones, PMPs, PNDs and gaming handhelds."
TC35893XBG
Toshiba's low-pin-count, small-package TC35893XBG provides up to 20 configurable general purpose I/O ports at needed locations. It has built-in functionality for managing a keypad and PWM signal generation for LED and vibrator control. The TC35893XBG also has a small 3mm x 3mm footprint that is well suited for space-constrained handhelds. Low-power features include operation from a low frequency 32 kHz clock source and the ability for peripherals connected to the TC35893XBG to operate independently of the application processor for increased battery life. It comes in a 25-ball plastic BGA package. Other features include:
-- 1.6V to 2.7V power supply range
-- Two operating modes for power saving. Auto-sleep feature detects activity at the IO and switches dynamically between the power modes.
-- Separate voltage supplies for up to three I/Os
-- Three cascadable 32-bit timers
-- Watchdog functionality
-- Failsafe operation for I2C, interrupt, reset and clock
-- Timer architecture that allows 32 pattern generations per timer, programmable into one register
TC35894XBG
Toshiba's low pin count, small package TC35894XBG provides up to 24 configurable general purpose I/O ports at needed locations. Like the TC35893XBG, the device offers built-in functionality for managing a keypad and PWM signal generation for LED and vibrator control. Additionally, the TC35894XBG features support for up to 26 direct keys. The TC35894XBG also has a small 3.5mm x 3.5mm footprint and uses an internal clock generator to deliver a small form factor. The TC35894XBG includes the same low power features as the TC35893XBG and comes in a 36-ball plastic BGA package. Other features include:
-- 1.6V to 2.7V power supply range
-- Two operating modes for power saving. Auto-sleep feature detects activity at the IO and switches dynamically between the power modes.
-- Three cascadable 32-bit timers
-- Watchdog functionality
-- Failsafe operation for I2C, interrupt, reset and clock
-- Timer architecture that allows 32 pattern generations per timer, programmable into one register
Pricing and Availability
The TC35893XBG and TC35894XBG are available now and priced at $1.00 per unit in 10K quantities.
About Toshiba's Mobile Strategic Initiative
Toshiba's Mobile Strategic Initiative, announced in 2007, combines an expanded product portfolio, support tools (reference designs and evaluation boards) and the company's cooperation with baseband, application processor, I/O and core vendors to help TAEC customers address tough issues facing current and future mobile handset/portable consumer electronics designs, including system integration, emerging standards and interoperability.
