Rotary Position Sensors target automotive applications.

October 31, 2008 - Offering alternative to non-contact Hall Effect sensors, SV3H Series achieves 10 million rotation cycles and operates from -40 to +125°C. Units are available in 2.1 mm low-profile SMT package that can withstand lead-free solder temperatures. Automotive applications include angular detection for steering wheel, seat position, and gear shift; selector switches for climate control; position detection for power windows and sunroof; and variable resistors for dimmer control.

Murata Adds to its Automotive Market Rotary Position Sensor Line

Advanced Series Developed to Replace More Expensive, Lesser Functioning Contact Sensors

Smyrna, GA, October 20, 2008 - Murata Electronics North America, a world-leading innovator in electronics and the largest global supplier of ceramic passive components, today announced the addition of the SV3H series to its SMD rotary position sensor lineup that includes the popular SV01 series.

The SV3H was developed as a low cost alternative to non-contact type Hall Effect sensors. The SV3H is the world's first contact position sensor to achieve 10 million rotation cycles reliability, which was developed through Murata's efforts to improve the rotational reliability of the SV01 series. The low cost SV3H series is available in low profile (2.1mm) surface mount package that can withstand lead-free solder temperatures.

Specific automotive applications for both products include angular detection (steering wheel, seat position, gear-shift, and pedal positioning, as well as adaptive front lighting systems), selector switches (climate control), position detection (power windows, sunroof and lift gates) and variable resistors (dimmer control). Depending on level of rotation reliability is needed; either the SV3H or the SV01 can be selected.

Additional individual product benefits are as follows:

SV01

- 1 million cycle durability

- Dust proof construction

- Operating temperature of -40C to +85C

SV3H

- Higher reliability with 10 million cycles durability

- Same package as SV01

- Operating temperature of -40C to +125C

- Less expensive replacement for hall sensors

"This announcement underscores Murata's commitment to constantly provide flexible, cost effective design solutions for the automotive market," stated Mitch Nozaki, Product Manager.

"The SV3H product provides a new low cost and simple solution for many of the new position sensing applications that are developing in automotive applications. Designers no longer have to just consider Hall Effect sensors for high rotation reliability applications."

Samples are available in the range of $0.40 to $0.50 for the SV01 and $1.20 for the SV3H. Lead time is approximately two to five weeks. Additional purchasing info can be found online at www.murata-northamerica.com.
