Transmitters are power-optimized and footprint-conscious.

October 17, 2008 - Designed for medium- to high-power applications in VHF band III, NA8200 DAB/T-DMB transmitters can also be configured to handle DVB-H or MediaFLO(TM) wireless TV standards. They use SX801 exciter, with processing time of less than 100 ms in DAB mode I, and output power for each rack ranges from 800-2,400 W before filter. Amplifiers may be used in broadband applications in VHF band III frequency range from 174-250 MHz without additional adjustment.

More Power and Smaller Footprints Make the New DAB/T-DMB Transmitters from Rohde & Schwarz Cost-Efficient

Munich, October 9, 2008. - The new R&S NA8200 DAB/T-DMB transmitters from Rohde & Schwarz have been designed for efficiency. Every transmitter in the family requires less space and delivers higher output power than its predecessor in the R&S NA6000 DAB series. This allows users to save on infrastructure and operating costs. The transmitters use the fastest exciter available on the market today: the new R&S SX801. They are designed for medium- to high-power applications in VHF band III. The transmitters can also easily be configured to handle the DVB-H or MediaFLO(TM) wireless TV standards. Already the market leader in the DAB/T-DMB field, Rohde & Schwarz is increasing its competitive edge with these new transmitters.

The R&S NA8200 offers a highly valued feature: enhanced power-added efficiency (PAE). Thanks to an exclusive new function, the transmitter achieves optimum PAE even when output power is reduced. This means lower operating costs. All new-generation Rohde & Schwarz transmitters are based on this system design. Output power for each rack is between 800 W and 2400 W before the filter. This high RF power in a minimum of space reduces infrastructure costs. The standby exciter, which also saves space, is accommodated in the same rack.

An important innovation in the new transmitter concept is the R&S SX801 exciter. Featuring a processing time of less than 100 ms in DAB mode I, the R&S SX801 is the fastest exciter currently on the market. The additional speed is a major benefit in large-area networks, as well as in the case of ETI signal feed via satellite, or if a network is operated using transmitters from different providers: The longer the signal path, the less time remains for signal processing. After all, the reference clock requires that the total delay of the signal does not exceed one second.

The amplifiers may be used in broadband applications in the VHF band III frequency range from 174 MHz to 250 MHz without additional adjustment. Therefore, the transmitter can be switched at any point to the required DAB channel of 5A to 13F. When the transmitter is placed into service or when its frequency range is changed, time-consuming precorrection is no longer necessary because stored precorrection curves for all frequencies and power levels are automatically loaded. The R&S NA8200 is also flexible when it comes to its operating voltage. Depending on the user's requirements, all power classes can be delivered with power supplies for either three-phase or single-phase AC supply networks. This means that the R&S NA8200 can easily be integrated into existing infrastructures.

The R&S NA8200 accommodates up to six preamplifiers in one rack, which gives it a high level of redundancy. Program distribution will be maintained even if one amplifier fails. The transmitters are cooled by two internal fans and an external cooling system can be attached via the transmitter's roof or floor.

If multiple DAB/T-DMB frequencies are being processed at a site, Rohde & Schwarz can also supply the transmitters with an N+1 standby system. The transmitter is ready to handle future DAB standards. Simple upgrades using software will be available to accommodate changes in standards. The R&S NA8200 can be converted from a DAB transmitter to an R&S NW8200 TV transmitter.

All transmitters of the R&S 8000 families for audio and TV broadcasting are based on the same concept and contain largely identical components. As a result, network operators can achieve significant savings with regard to spare parts kept on hand and training costs for equipment operators. Moreover, the standardized interfaces make integration into a network management system much smoother. Remote interfaces and a color display turn operation and control into an easy task.

The R&S NA8200 DAB/T-DMB transmitters will be available from Rohde & Schwarz as of March 2009.
