Exar Launches Industry-First Smallest and Fastest Single-Channel Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART) Series

Six Device Family Offers System Architects Multiple Design Options

FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 29 // - Exar Corporation (NASDAQ:EXAR), released an industry-first single-channel UART series composed of six devices offering enhanced features, multiple package sizes, voltage, and FIFO levels. Giving system architects new design options, the XR16Mxxx family targets a cross-section of portable applications including cellular data devices, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), and GPS systems, as well as a variety of industrial and telecommunications applications.

"With a robust set of industry-first features across the entire XR16Mxxx single-channel series including the smallest packaging option at 3x3mm BGA, independent TX/RX baud rate support, and fast performance at 16Mbps we have once again widened the innovation gap between Exar and other UART competitors," said Levent Ozcolak, vice president, Interface Product Line. "With a multitude of design choices encompassing industry-standard low voltage operating levels: 1.8V, 2.5V, and 3.3V plus 16-byte, 32-byte, and 64-byte FIFO levels this series is ideal for high-performance, low voltage and low power next generation platforms."

Series Details

Composed of six different devices, the XR16Mxxx series includes the XR16M570, XR16M580, XR16M670, XR16M680, XR16M770 and XR16M780. All the devices share a common set of features including Auto RTS/CTS Hardware Flow Control, Auto XON/XOFF Software Flow Control, TX/RX FIFO Counters, Different TX and RX Baud Rates, Fractional Baud Rate Generator, Auto RS-485 Half-Duplex Direction Control, Multidrop mode with address detect, and Infrared mode. All the devices have PowerSave mode which reduces the sleep current to a minimum during sleep modes. The XR16M570/580 series are 16-byte FIFO devices; the XR16M670/680 series are 32-byte FIFO devices, and the XR16M770/780 are 64-byte FIFO devices. The XR16M570/670/770 series is compliant with the Intel bus interface, while the XR16M580/680/780 is compatible with both the Intel and Motorola bus interface.

"The XR16M580/680/780 is compatible with Exar's earlier XR16L580 in 32-pin QFN and 48-pin TQFP packages, and the XR16M570/670/770 series is compatible with the XR16L570 in 24-pin and 32-pin QFN packages which ensures an easy migration path for customers seeking lower power solutions required for consumer and portable applications," said Eric Nguyen, strategic marketing director, Interface Products. "In addition, the XR16Mxxx series is also available in a 25-pin BGA package for space-constrained designs."

Interface Products

Exar has one of the broadest portfolios of high-performance interface solutions including UARTs, serial transceivers - RS-232, RS-485, and multi-protocol - and integrated UART/transceiver combinations. For chip-to-chip or system-to-system connections, Exar's single and multi-channel interface ICs provides immediate competitive advantages to designers: low power, reduction in board space requirements, increased bandwidth capacity, and enhanced product features. Interface devices are found practically everywhere including point-of-sale (POS) terminals, digital televisions, industrial automation equipment, handheld devices, and networking environments.

Tools and Support

Evaluation boards, reference designs, and software drivers are available. With the availability of these tools and Exar's application support line: uarttechsupport@exar.com, UART customers can accelerate implementation by eliminating driver development, testing and diagnostic procedures.
