September 11, 2008 - Solar-powered flashlights and Dynamo self-powered, hand crank flashlights and lanterns are alternative energy, emission-free portable lighting solutions. Rechargeable lithium batteries are charged by cranking handle or by exposing flashlight/lantern to any type of light, indoor or out. Batteries never need to be replaced, and durable LEDs withstand lifetime of use. Hybrid Dynamo and Solar Flashlight that combines crank and solar charging capabilities is also available.

Landfill Contribution

I have 2 of these lights. Both lasted about 3 weeks. It appears that there is not overcharge protection. So if you have your light in the sun all the time, it will fry the battery over the period of two to three weeks. They say that you should not store this in the dark, however you should not store this in the sun either. If you have a full charge, then put it out of the sun and save the light from going to the landfill or the tedium of searching out more batteries to work in the light until you can figure out the balance of how long to charge without damaging the battery. A good product potential, but it really is not there yet. The consumers need to send a message to Dorcy advocating that they finish the job they started.
