Yaskawa's New J1000 Drive Takes The Stage

Great Things Come in Small Packages, including Yaskawa Quality, Reliability and Performance

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (Aug. 1, 2008)- Yaskawa Electric America, Inc., the world leader in the manufacturing of AC drives, servomotors, motion controllers and robotics, makes their presence felt once again. This time they have done so with the introduction and release of their new J1000 AC drive.

The drive may be the world's smallest compact drive in size (70% less space required), but don't let its stature fool you as the all in one J1000 package is still very capable of providing outstanding quality, reliability and performance. Yaskawa has once again lived up to their reputation of providing the automation industry with a state of the art microdrive to meet today's needs and demands.

"The new J1000 was designed with three main principles in mind consisting of Quality, Reduced Cost of Ownership and Maintainability," Yaskawa MicroDrive Product Manager Todd Ammerman said. "All of these allow for the customer to get the most out of their products at a cost-effective price."

The quality of design stems partially from a reduction in the number of parts, therefore resulting in an increased Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) rate of an impressive 28 years. The craftsmanship of design also increases the lifetime of components such as fans, capacitors and thermal optimization.

The reduced cost of ownership is achieved by the compact design, side-by-side mounting and the ability to operate a larger motor with the normal duty rating. It also provides overexcitation braking, which in turn reduces stop times without the need for external braking resistors. Even faster stopping can occur, thanks to a standard internal braking transistor.

As far as maintainability is concerned, both hardware and software peripherals such as DriveWizardTMPlus and the USB Copy Unit (Y-Stick) may be used. This will allow for file storage that can be used to program multiple drives quickly or for future back-up use. Maintainability is also provided by lifetime monitors that continuously monitor the health of the key components.

The J1000 is available from 1/8 to 7.5 HP. The voltage classes are 200-240V single-phase, 200-240V three-phase, and 380-480V three-phase, all of which are 50/60 Hz. The J1000 shares a common programming language with its V1000 cousin as well as future released products, ensuring quick set-up modes, easy programming, and reduced start-up times.

Some standard features of the J1000 consist of an open loop V/f control with a speed range of 40:1, both a normal (120% overload for 60 sec.) and heavy duty (150% overload for 60 sec.) rating, a starting torque of 150% at 3Hz, a 5-digit LED keypad, increased vibration resistance from 20Hz to 50Hz and a swing PWM function to decrease audible motor noise. It also includes an output frequency of 0-400 Hz, Modbus communication at up to 38.4 kbps, a short circuit current rating of 30 kA rms symmetrical, an ingenious pre-maintenance function, a preferred parameter feature and "no tools required" cooling fan replacement.

The J1000 is ideal for major applications of industries such as material handling, food and beverage, fan and pump control, packaging, agricultural machines and industrial washers. It includes CE, UL and cUL global certification approval as well as keeping the environment safe by being RoHS compliant.

In 1967, Yaskawa Electric America, Inc., a U. S. corporation, was created to provide automation solutions and support to customers in North and South America. Established in 1915, Yaskawa Electric Corporation has been leading the way in setting the industry's standards including becoming the world's first company to have manufactured and shipped over 10-million AC drives to go along with another 5,000,000 servomotors. Yaskawa holds international quality excellence awards, including the prestigious Deming Application Prize and its products are manufactured in ISO-9001:2000 registered facilities.
