Communications System aids in mobile broadband delivery.

August 19, 2008 - HX System facilitates Ku-band satellite delivery of mobile broadband services on vehicles, ships, trains, and planes. Compensation for Doppler Shift of RF signal ensures continuous broadband connectivity during high-speed travel, and inbound channel spreading technology enables use of small antennas. System also offers NMEA antenna interface for integration with ship-based GPS system and can maintain IP link when satellite link is lost for short durations.

Hughes Introduces Mobility Enhancements for HX System

New HX features facilitate satellite delivery of mobile broadband services on land, sea, and in the air

Germantown, Md., USA, June 16, 2008 - Hughes Network Systems, LLC., (HUGHES), the world's leading provider of broadband satellite networks and services, today announced the introduction of enhanced capabilities for its innovative HX System that facilitate Ku-band satellite delivery of mobile broadband services on vehicles, ships, trains, and planes.

"Whether using cell phones, PDAs or laptops, people on the go demand to stay connected-wherever they may be," said Bahram Pourmand, executive vice president of Hughes. "Our new HX System enhancements make it easy for integrators to deliver mobile broadband services virtually anywhere on land, sea, or in the air, using Ku-band satellites available around the globe."

The new capabilities leverage the innovative and compact HX broadband satellite system to satisfy key mobility-specific requirements.
o Inbound Channel Spreading: A key challenge of mobility is to use the smallest possible antenna while still meeting all relevant FCC and ITU regulations. The new HX System meets this challenge by spreading the inbound channel by a factor of two to four times the symbol rate, thereby reducing the power density of transmissions significantly. This enables the use of very small antennas, which are lower in cost and are more easily installed on vessels and vehicles.
o Doppler Compensation: Broadband access for passengers traveling at high rates of speed on trains or planes is often compromised due to a Doppler Shift of the RF signal. The enhanced HX System compensates for this Doppler Shift, enabling passengers to surf the Internet at high speed even when they're moving at high speed.
o NMEA Antenna Interface: A key requirement for maritime applications is the capability to continually track the location of a mobile satellite station. The HX enhancements include an NMEA interface which offers easy integration with a ship's GPS system. This enables ships to meet FCC and ITU regulations which require earth stations on maritime vessels to maintain a record of the vessel's location.
o Rapid Blockage Recovery and Persistent IP Connection: A key challenge of mobility is that service can be briefly interrupted by trees, overpasses, and tunnels. Hughes has developed persistent IP connection capability in the HX System that maintains the IP link when the satellite link is lost for a short duration, ensuring customers do not have to restart their sessions after service is restored.
