Dow Biocides Offers Low VOC Alternative for Paint and Coatings Preservation

Buffalo Grove, IL - July 08, 2008

Customers looking for more environmentally conscious formulations in the U.S. now have a new biocide option from Dow Biocides, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company ("Dow"). CANGUARD(TM) ULTRA BIT 20 LE Preservative (patent pending) provides a low VOC (volatile organic content) biocide for the protection of industrial water-based products against harmful bacteria, yeasts and fungi.

Demonstrating exceptional chemical stability and good compatibility with most formulations, CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE is a broad-spectrum biocide that can be used under a broad range of pH and temperature conditions. CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE, a high purity non-formaldehyde bactericide, is an effective preservative in most aqueous compositions and is commonly used in the following applications: polymer latexes and emulsion systems, water-based paints, coatings, adhesives, oil-in-water emulsions, textile spin-finish solutions, fountain solutions, and bacterial control in the paper-making process.

"CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE exhibits a comprehensive range of benefits and is one of the best preservatives for water-based products in the marketplace today," said Ken Littel, marketing manager, material protection, for Dow Biocides. "Dow continues to provide high-value, cost-effective end use products. CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE offers customers broad activity against microbial challenges with exceptional environmental features such as its low VOC and non-formaldehyde base."

The multiple benefits customers can expect of CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE include:

o Low volatile organic content

o Low color

o Low viscosity

o Can be used in products with pH ranging from (2-12)

o Very low freezing point; freeze-thaw stable

o Use at higher temperatures and under very alkaline conditions where other preservatives are less effective

o Near neutral minimizing the risk of pH shock of the treated formulation

o Developed from CANGUARD ULTRA BIT paste, a highly pure grade of BIT

o Excellent thermal stability

o Does not contain or release formaldehyde or contain any halogenated isothiazolin

o Compatible with most anionic, cationic, and non-ionic dispersant

CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE, prepared from CANGUARD ULTRA BIT Paste, is a long-lasting biocide based on widely-used BIT technology. BIT is one of the most utilized biocides for in-can preservation.

Due to regulatory requirements, not all products are available in all regions. Please check with your Dow representative for additional information.
