Power and Speed Combined: New Sharp Up-800 Offers Enhanced Functionality at a User's Fingertips

New touch screen interface enables operators to work faster, more efficiently, and managers to oversee sales more closely

CHICAGO, IL, May 17, 2008 -- Sharp Electronics Corporation today introduces the new UP-800 Point of Sale System (POS) at The 2008 National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show in Chicago. Designed to meet the needs of retail and hospitality businesses, the UP-800 expands on the full featured Sharp platform of the highly touted UP-700 POS system and includes the same powerful, reliable Sharp embedded system, but adds a wide range of new features designed to make operators more efficient and accurate when processing transactions.

"Flexibility, expandability and versatility are key in the fast-paced POS market, and no other product combines these three elements as seamlessly as the UP-800," said Greg Tucker, Product Planning Manager, POS Sales, Sharp Imaging and Information Company of America, a subsidiary of Sharp Electronics Corporation. "Its speed and power are critical for businesses where the operator needs the right options and functions right away.

The familiar Sharp keyboard provides fast access to the most used sales items and functions. The UP-800 features a brilliant new touchscreen interface for optimal speed and flexibility. The touchscreen allows operators to quickly switch between multiple menus that can be pre-programmed with the needed functions or sales items to insure faster service times and more accurate transactions.

The UP-800 can handle up to 60,000 sales items, giving managers an added level of control and monitoring over inventory. The UP-800 also provides other enhanced managerial controls designed to increase overall efficiency, manage discounts and voids more effectively, and reduce the instances of operator abuse. For quick serve restaurants, the UP-800 features a new combo function and upsize options, enabling one touch functionality for faster order processing.

Even with a keyboard and touch screen interface, the UP-800 maintains a very slim profile and has a space-saving cash drawer that maximizes counter space. The series will also feature combination items for box sales tracking and quantity tax handling for special merchandise; hold and recall functions so that operators can help customers without stopping sales flow, and an SD Memory Card interface for data and programs, making back-up quick and easy.

To meet customer requests for various payment options, the UP-800 accommodates standard credit card processing in addition to gift card processing and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT). Also, in addition to standard features, the UP-800 series offers new optional devices and device interfaces to provide businesses with enhanced functionality and the ability to seamlessly integrate various revenue sources throughout a store. The options include:
o Interface to security camera systems
o External two line customer display
o VIVOPay contactless payment device
o BERG Drink Dispenser

Robust Front and Back Office Software:
The functionality of the UP-800 is greatly enhanced with the addition of the optional Sharp SDW PC software. SDW is based on the industry-standard Sybase® Data architecture, making it exceptionally reliable. Restaurants can use SDW to create comprehensive polls and reports, and import and export those reports to popular spreadsheet applications for analysis and a wide range of other programming functions such as PLUs, departments, text, condiment tables, combo meals, keyboard data, employees, promotions, and many other functions right from a PC, directly to the POS, saving time and manpower.

Sharp Intelligent Data Service:
The UP-800 also can connect to the Sharp Intelligent Data Enterprise (S.I.D.E.) service, a POS reporting system that automatically uploads sales information from stores via the Sharp UP-C100 store controller to a secure web portal. S.I.D.E. is a consolidated, multi-unit reporting system for all levels of an organization that provides secure access to web-based reporting, so restaurants can quickly and closely track sales data daily without having to estimate or manage archiving. Each day, data is automatically "pushed" and backed-up to an online data warehouse, managed by Sharp. Restaurants can then quickly and easily access this information from anywhere at any time via the intuitive web portal.

The UP-800 will be available in June through Sharp's authorized dealer network. For information about the complete line of Sharp point-of-sale products, contact Sharp Electronics Corporation, Sharp Plaza, Mahwah, NJ 07495-1163 or call 800-BE-SHARP.
