Field Test Instruments check magmeter performance.
August 7, 2008 -
Suitable for testing ABB MagMaster and AquaMaster flowmeters as well as AquaProbe insertion flowmeters, CalMaster 2 tool verifies calibration to within ±1% while magmeter remains in operation. Unit stores up to 100 tests, and offers instant pass/fail indication via programmable display. Used primarily for new installations, CheckMaster validation tool provides printed proof that tested flowmeter components have been installed and connected properly.

New In-Place Field Test Instruments Check Magmeter Performance, Calibration
WARMINSTER, PA -- ABB Instrumentation has introduced its advanced CalMaster 2 Suite of electromagnetic flowmeter test instruments for water and wastewater municipal markets. The suite comprises two standalone electronic test instruments: the CalMaster 2 verification tool and the CheckMaster validation tool. Eligible meters for testing include ABB MagMaster and AquaMaster flowmeters as well as AquaProbe insertion flowmeters, whether AC outlet or battery powered.
The CalMaster 2 tool verifies calibration to within ±1% while the magmeter remains in operation. It compares test parameters to the meter's original "fingerprint," first determined at the factory following manufacture (and stored in the transmitter). The 15-minute test covers the primary sensor, transmitter, and connected shielded cable, offering traceability to NIST calibration with a printed certificate. With no available fingerprint, the unit checks meter calibration to within ±2% accuracy.
The CalMaster 2 unit stores up to 100 tests, and does NOT require a connected PC for checking calibrations in the field. It offers an instant "pass/fail" indication via a programmable display. Back in the meter shop, the CalMaster 2 unit can be connected to a PC with associated software to transfer and process test results for printing certificates, running diagnostics, and archiving data for trending. Users can download their meters' "fingerprints" from the ABB website.
The second instrument in the CalMaster 2 Suite is the CheckMaster unit, which is virtually identical in appearance to the CalMaster 2 tool. This instrument, primarily for new installations, is useful for contractors or large municipal users to provide printed proof that the tested flowmeter components have all been installed and connected properly.
ABB Instrumentation will continue to market the original CalMaster unit, now designated CalMaster 1. Customer circumstances will determine the choice. CalMaster 1 does require a connected PC in the field to verify calibrations. First introduced in 1995, CalMaster 1 was the world's first system for verifying the calibrated accuracy of a magmeter while it remained in operation on line. In-place calibration can save considerable expense, especially for large and vaulted flowmeters that must be shipped to the factory for re-calibration.
