3D Laser Scanners feature CMM touch probe technology.

July 24, 2008 - Able to collect over 75,000 3D coordinates/sec, manually operated Surveyor WM-Series Systems are fitted with interchangeable laser probes so they can perform high-speed 3D laser scanning, accurate to 12 microns, then convert back to traditional CMM touch probe measuring. Fully functional CMMs include fine adjustment and pneumatic axis locks to each of 3 axes. Available in 4 work-envelope sizes, each machine has volumetric mechanical measuring accuracy of 3.5 + L/250.

Laser Design Announces High Accuracy, Low Cost 3D Laser Scanner Using Wenzel Manual CMM Base

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Laser Design Inc., the leading supplier of 3D laser scanners for more than 20 years, in partnership with Wenzel CMMs, has launched a new line of dual-technology measuring systems combining the industry's most accurate 3D laser scanning technology and high accuracy CMM touch probe technology. The new Surveyor WM-Series (Wenzel CMM-based) laser scanning system offers the best of both worlds: affordable 3D laser scanning along with conventional CMM touch probe measuring in a manually operated system.

The WM-Series manual systems are easy to use and can output 3D laser scan data along with touch probe coordinate data on the same project. The laser scanner probe increases scanning speed enormously in all types of measurement applications, simple and complex. "This is a great option for companies who want to utilize high accuracy 3D laser scanning to end their QA bottlenecks and obtain all the advantages of full 3D laser scanning shape capture, but don't have the budget for fully automated, programmable scanning," commented C. Martin Schuster, President of Laser Design. "Now users can afford the incredible speed and accuracy of non-contact laser measurement along with traditional CMM touch probe measuring for half the cost of the automated Surveyor WS-Series Scanners."

Laser scanning typically increases the speed of inspection projects by ten times over the most advanced touch probe-based CMM inspections. Laser Design's SLP lasers are able to collect over 75,000 3D coordinates per second. CAD surface models are output in the IGES or STEP formats, or as parametric solids models. Wenzel CMM customers will be amazed at the time and cost savings of using laser scanning, and the superb accuracies.

The Wenzel CMM-based Surveyor WM-Series systems are fitted with completely interchangeable Laser Design SLP laser probes so they can quickly and easily perform high-speed 3D laser scanning, and also convert back to traditional CMM touch probe measuring. Now customers can experience exceptionally fast throughput along with the ability to measure anything utilizing the best contact and non-contact technologies in one fully integrated measuring system.

3D laser scanning enables applications such as reverse engineering of parts or tools, which are nearly impossible with traditional measurement methods alone. Complex shapes are completely captured with laser scanning and can be reproduced quickly and accurately. Measuring with a touch probe yields only partial coverage and takes exponentially longer to accomplish. Laser scanning is non-contact, so there is no variation in operator technique, making results reliable and repeatable.

Easy to set up, 3D laser scanning inspections are accurate to 12 microns. Results are shown as a model of the part comparing the scan data to the original CAD model. Specific feature measurements can also be extracted from the point cloud data.

The manual Surveyor WM-Series systems are fully-functional CMMs with fine adjustment and pneumatic axis locks to each of the 3 axes. An optional 4th Rotary Axis is also available for semi automated scanning. The Surveyor WM-Series tables are all-granite, for superior stability, durability, and accuracy. The WM-Series includes 4 basic work-envelope size choices: 500 X 600 X 400mm (z), 700mm X 800mm X 500mm, 700mm X 1000mm X 500mm(z), 700mm X 1500mm X 500mm(z). Each machine has volumetric mechanical measuring accuracy of 3.5 + L/250.

Laser Design, Inc. has been the leading supplier of ultra-precise, 3D laser scanning systems and services for over 20 years. Used for capturing the 3D shape of objects with complex geometries and free-form surfaces, Laser Design's Surveyor line of automated and portable scanning systems are ideal for 3D scanning applications involving inspection and reverse engineering of complex shaped plastic and metal parts. The company's patented laser line-probe technology dramatically reduces scanning time by collecting data substantially faster and more accurately than conventional metrology technologies. Laser Design integrates Geomagic software with its laser scanners to provide complete solutions for reverse engineering and inspection applications.

Headquartered in Minneapolis, the company also has Regional Technical Services and Support Centers in Seattle and Detroit, and distributors throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. Laser Design also operates GKS Inspection Services (www.GKS.com), an in-house service bureau division offering complete 3D scanning, reverse engineering, and dimensional inspection services.
