News Story

Ethernet Extenders offer redundant rings support.

July 7, 2008 - Featuring built-in 4-port Ethernet switch, Wolverine Models DDW-221 and DDW-222 offer transfer rates up to 5.7 Mbit/s and operating distance of 10 km. Redundant protocol can be used on SHDSL interface or on built-in Ethernet switch. It uses FRNT technology to re-configure network in event of any link or hardware failure. Model DDW-222 includes RS-232 serial adapter and 10-port Virtual Com port re-direct software, which re-directs Com port to IP address.

Press Release
Release date: July 3, 2008

DDW-221 and DDW-222

DDW-221 and DDW-222 have been added to Westermo's Wolverine series of Ethernet extenders. They have all the same features as their predecessor, the DDW-220, but also provide integrated serial port and redundant rings support. The most critically demanding applications are targeted: traffic management, airports management, on board railway signalling, critical process control, etc.

DDW-221 and DDW-222 support redundancy rings

Both for DDW-221 and DDW-222, the redundant protocol can be used either on the SHDSL interface or on the built-in Ethernet switch. It uses Westermo's unique FRNT (Fast Recovery of Network Topology) technology which is the fastest protocol on the market to re-configure a network in the event of any link or hardware failure.

Further, the DDW-222 includes a RS-232 serial adapter and 10-port Virtual Com port re-director software which re-directs a Com port to an IP address. Pre-existing programs that use Com ports can then be reused in IP networks. The cables of existing serial networks can be reused to create an Ethernet network while still allowing the legacy serial device to function on the new network. The unit supports TCP client, TCP server and UDP protocol modes allowing it to be used in a wide variety of applications.

Both DDW-221 and DDW-222 benefit from the advanced properties and functions of the DDW-220. The Westermo DDW-220 is an Ethernet extender enhanced with a built-in four port Ethernet switch which allows this one unit to be used to create entire Ethernet solutions. Existing twisted pair cables can be used to establish a high speed remote connection between two Ethernet networks. With transfer rates up to 5.7 Mbits/s and with an operating distance of up to 10 kilometres at lower data rates, this is an easy-to-install alternative to fibre optic or radio systems when linking remote Ethernet networks. The DDW-220 uses a transient blocking unit on each DSL line to provide both over-current and over-voltage protection on the line allowing it to handle indirect lightning strike transients, power induction and short circuit problems.

Easy configuration and diagnostics

Configuration of the units is kept to a minimum for easy use. They are preconfigured for multi-drop applications meaning a simple installation can be done with no software configuration at all. For further configuration, a built-in Web interface is provided so that only a computer with a standard Web browser is required. Help text and more advanced configuration are available within the Web interface. There are also comprehensive Web screen diagnostics for both the SHDSL transmission interfaces and the Ethernet switch allowing statistics to be viewed. The units also support SNMP allowing them to be managed as part of the overall network infrastructure.
