MokaFive Brings Cross-Platform, Centrally Managed, Rich Virtual Desktops to Market

MokaFive Virtual Desktop Solution offers centralized management for IT administrators and flexibility and power of rich, local execution for users

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., May 20 -- MokaFive(TM), the next-generation desktop virtualization company, today announced the general availability of the MokaFive Virtual Desktop Solution(TM). Now, organizations have a cross-platform desktop virtualization offering that delivers the best of both worlds: the control of centralized management for IT administrators and the power and flexibility of rich, local execution for users.

"The arrival of virtualization on the desktop will change the way desktops have been managed and promises greater flexibility for the user," said Bill Demas, president and CEO, MokaFive. "We believe our MokaFive Virtual Desktop Solution is the first to bridge the chasm between what IT administrators need -- centralized management -- and what users want -- freedom in their computing environment. By offering our virtual desktops as a service, MokaFive is making it easier for companies to get up and running quickly."

Already deployed in nearly 50 pilots and downloaded more than 80,000 times, MokaFive Virtual Desktop Solution introduces several key industry firsts. Its virtual desktops, known as LivePCs, run on Windows, Macintosh and MokaFive's BareMetal(TM) Linux operating systems. LivePCs can be executed on laptops, desktops or even from portable storage devices such as a USB stick or iPod. This gives users the mobility to work in the office, home or on the road, online or offline -- securely at all times. LivePCs self-heal on every reboot and will self-destruct with unauthorized use.

Many of the world's largest hardware and software vendors are embracing the MokaFive Virtual Desktop Solution to help customers better manage their desktop and laptop computers.

"Intel has added MokaFive to our ISV developer program to collaborate and create enhanced capabilities with both our consumer and enterprise client platforms," said Etienne DeGroot, Director of Global Alliances for Intel. "Proof of concept efforts are underway to help deliver new user value that takes full advantage of our platform architecture further adding success to MokaFive's quest to deliver state of the art solutions."

"MokaFive's approach takes into consideration every step of the virtual desktop lifecycle," said Michael Rose, an analyst for market research firm IDC. "Desktop virtualization is not an easy technology to implement, so for it to see more uptake in the enterprise, it is critical that vendors lower the barriers to adoption. Focusing on the entire lifecycle of virtual desktops is an important starting point."

The MokaFive Difference

MokaFive Virtual Desktop Solution offers a comprehensive approach to desktop virtualization. Because it's delivered as a service, IT administrators do not need to manage or invest in new infrastructure. MokaFive Virtual Desktop Solution requires just a per-user subscription fee and can take advantage of existing web servers. Its differentiating features include:

-- Automated updates: MokaFive's unique Auto Subscription(TM) technology pushes administrator security updates and application patches to users in a process similar to subscribing to RSS feeds. These are pulled down automatically and seamlessly when users connect to the network.
-- Faster launches: MokaFive's Predictive Fetch(TM) technology makes virtual computers start up faster and update quicker -- in seconds, not minutes -- than other solutions on the market. With MokaFive, users can start using a LivePC before it has finished downloading.
-- Self-healing: LivePCs "self heal" from spyware and malware through MokaFive's Rejuvenation(TM) technology that allows users to recover by simply shutting down and restarting a LivePC. On reboot, the operating system and all applications are automatically restored to their original, clean state and all documents and data remain intact and unaffected.
-- Cross-platform and OS flexibility: LivePCs can be installed on a desktop, laptop or any portable storage device like an encrypted flash drive or even an iPod. To provide even greater computing freedom and flexibility, users can work on a single USB stick for multiple platforms, including Windows and Macintosh.
-- Enhanced security with BareMetal: While the MokaFive solution is designed with security in mind, the company has created BareMetal for those with higher security demands. This customized Linux distribution runs on a bare x86 computer without an underlying operating system, making it optimal for security-critical applications. As an added benefit, businesses save on licensing costs, since BareMetal is Linux-based.

Availability

MokaFive Virtual Desktop Solution is immediately available in two versions. MokaFive Professional is for enterprise and workgroup deployments and will be sold via annual subscription. MokaFive Express, designed for home users and developers, is available as a free download. A library of LivePCs, created by MokaFive and the user community, is available at lab.mokafive.com.
