Ipanema Technologies Launches Smart Path Selection; New Feature of the Ipanema Autonomic WAN Optimization System
Allows Enterprises to Combine Multiple Physical Networks Into one to Improve Application Performance Guarantees and Business Continuity
WALTHAM, Mass., April 29, 2008-Ipanema Technologies, a leader in application traffic management systems for wide area networks (WANs), today announced Smart Path Selection, which allows enterprises to combine multiple physical networks into one to further improve application performance guarantees and business continuity.
Enterprises today rely on their WANs to deliver business critical applications to their distributed workforce. A redundant network infrastructure is no longer an option for specific market sectors such as the finance industry. Many enterprises need to mitigate the risks of relying on a single network or service provider. A combination of an MPLS network with backup ISDN or xDSL lines is the traditional answer to those concerns.
But these redundant networks are nearly always deployed in a manner in which the bandwidth of the secondary line is only used when the primary network fails. As a result, the capacity of the second (redundant) network is wasted.
Smart Path empowers enterprises with a new model, were the bandwidth of the primary and secondary networks are dynamically managed as if they were one, leading to an optimized use of network resources and maximized quality of user experience.
Smart Path is an additional feature of the Ipanema Autonomic WAN Optimization System. It relies on devices (the ip|engines) deployed over the WAN at the data centers and branch office locations. Smart Path relies on the Visibility and Optimization features of the Ipanema System to take dynamic decisions based on the real-time status of the paths (available bandwidth, quality, etc.). Each path selection is performed by making a comparison of this status compared with global application performance objectives and a global analysis of the traffic mix. The global application performance objectives represent the expected network behavior needed to support an application and its end users. The objectives are expressed in terms of per-user quality of experience requirements using a mapping of low-level network metrics into high-level quality of experience score such as mean opinion score (MOS) for voice and application quality score (AQS) for data applications.
Smart Path configuration is simple, being limited to the configuration of the global objectives; there is no need to set local policies on devices. Following the principles of autonomic networking, Smart Path automatically adapts to the changing nature of IT environments, thus leading to an extremely low total cost of ownership.
"For the first time it is possible to seamlessly combine multiple physical networks into one unified logical network without having to struggle with additional configuration and management complexities," said Mark Burton, product management director at Ipanema Technologies. "Enterprises can now benefit from new, innovative options to guarantee the performance of their critical applications and ensure business continuity."
Smart Path leverages Internet ubiquity and performance and yields significant bandwidth costs savings and dramatic improvements in both business continuity and application performance guarantees. Smart Patj is tightly coupled with other features of the Ipanema System including Visibility, Optimization and Acceleration.
Ipanema develops and sells next-generation solutions for application traffic management that allow enterprises to automatically align the network with their business objectives. The Ipanema System was specially created for all large Wide Area Networks (WAN), both in- country and international, as well as being for telecom operators and network service providers. Application performance management is delivered by integrating the functions of Visibility, Optimization, Acceleration and networked application governance. The SALSA platform (Scalable Application Level Service Architecture) allows telecom operators and network service providers to create repeatable application oriented value added services with the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Ipanema is used internationally by many large telecom operators as well as large multinationals in all market segments such as banking and finance, public sector, energy, pharmaceuticals, automobile, IT, etc. For more information go to www.ipanematech.com.
