Embedded IPC ThinkIO-Duo with Fieldbus Connection

Flexible and open OEM platform for future-proof networking

Eching, Germany, April 22, 2008 - The Kontron ThinkIO-Duo DIN rail PC is now equipped with Profinet RT Controller, Profibus DP and CANopen Master functionality for connection to distributed industrial Ethernet devices in addition to traditional fieldbus components. The flexible platform concept enables the development of further project specific protocols without any adjustment to driver software.

With a depth of 70 mm and a connector-level depth of 35 mm the extremely compact and passive cooled Kontron ThinkIO-Duo DIN rail PC comes with the IntelŽ Core(TM) Duo processor U2500 with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz and 512 MB or 1 GB of RAM. In addition to the high performance processor and internal Flash (512 MB/2 GB), the embedded IPC with a robust aluminium casing offers an optional Compact Flash socket for data storage or for backups/updates, 512KB non-volatile memory and all standard PC interfaces (2 x USB 2.0, RS232, DVI-I) and 2 x GBit LAN interfaces. The Kontron ThinkIO therefore enables remote access or connection to a company's IT infrastructure (ERP systems and databases). The interruptible onboard inputs can be used for quick reaction to important events, such as failure of the 24 V power supply when using an external uninterrupted power supply or transgressing an end switch. A watchdog and real-time clock round off the features.

The Kontron ThinkIO-Duo DIN rail PC requires neither batteries nor fans and is therefore maintenance-free. Since it has no moveable components, such as rotating disks, it is ideal for use in environments where shock and vibrations are expected. Moreover, it is designed with exclusively soldered components.

In addition to Windows XP Embedded, Kontron offers a real-time Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) software package as standard for the Kontron ThinkIO-Duo DIN rail PC. The use of the Linux operating system has been steadily increasing over the last four years and continues to be an increasingly popular choice for automation projects. Long term availability, stability, universal communication and visualization are the decisive benefits. The OSADL, of which Kontron is a member, is a further step towards standardization and wider acceptance.

With the Kontron ThinkIO-Duo DIN rail PC the company's customers benefit from reduced time-to-market since they can build upon an open platform and thereby concentrate on their core competences, such as application programming software and system/portfolio integration. The maintenance-free, flexible and robust design also reduces the total cost of ownership for end customers.
