New Huntsman Polyurethane Bonds Thermoplastic Marine Equipment Components

With the ability to maintain strong bonds between thermoplastic components when exposed to vibration, water and UV light, a high-performance polyurethane adhesive from Huntsman Advanced Materials, The Woodlands, Texas, is proving ideal for marine applications. Araldite® 2018 adhesive is a light-colored, low-viscosity polyurethane specially formulated for joining ABS, SMC, polycarbonate and glass-reinforced plastics. The thixotropic, gap-filling adhesive exhibits good shear and peel strengths as well as good flexibility and impact strength.

With this combination of performance characteristics, Araldite® 2018 polyurethane adhesive is the material of choice for a European manufacturer that installs acrylic navigation screens into ABS housings for boat cockpits. In addition to its physical properties, the Huntsman polyurethane supports production efficiency with its ease of use.

To assemble thermoplastic substrates, technicians simply sand and degrease surfaces to remove contaminants, apply a bead of mixed adhesive to components, join parts and allow them to cure for 16 hours at 73ºF (23ºC) or three hours at 104ºF (40ºC). Further facilitating handling, Araldite® 2018 polyurethane is packaged in convenient dual-barrel cartridges that provide for precise ratio control of resin and hardener and ensure thorough blending with disposable static mix nozzles.

Araldite® 2018 polyurethane adhesive is part of a new portfolio of structural adhesives from Huntsman Advanced Materials. The full family of Araldite® 2000 PLUS adhesives comprises 12 advanced epoxy, methacrylate and polyurethane systems designed to produce long-lasting bonds with high shear, peel and compression strength on a broad range of substrates.
